12/18/09...an important math message:

On the Infinite Campus parent portal, parents can view an “in-progress” final average, which is in yellow.   For students in Math 1, Math 2, Accel Math 1 and Accel Math 2, this average will not be final until January 6.

The state-mandated End-of-Course test scores for these courses will be returned to districts by January 5.  Glynn County teachers will input the scores in the EOCT/Final category which makes up 15% of the student’s final course average.  Students will receive report cards on Thursday, January 7. Report cards will indicate the final course average.

9/28/09: Mark your calendar for a community event! Tuesday, October 6th at 7:00pm at The College of Coastal Georgia Auditorium: Chris Sandy: Covict with a Cause. This presentation will be seen by all GA students, Monday, October 5th.

In April of 2000, Chris Sandy was a normal 22-year-old kid. He had a good job, enjoyed playing basketball, fishing, and hanging out with his buddies. That normal life came to an abrupt end on the evening of April 11th when Chris decided to go to a party, have four mixed drinks, and drive down a country road outside of Atlanta, GA.Traveling at a speed of 77-miles-per-hour on a road that carries a 35-mile-per-hour speed limit, Chris Sandy's car crashed into an oncoming vehicle that was attempting to make a left turn into a residential driveway. The turning vehicle was literally cut in half by the force of the crash, killing the elderly couple inside.
Chris Sandy was found guilty on two counts of DUI - Vehicular Homicide and was sentenced to 13 years in a Georgia State Prison. Upon his release from prison, Chris will spend 17 years on probation.Chris Sandy's presentation includes a DVD which won two Emmy awards in 2009.  The DVD was directed by Dan Johnson of Imagemaster Productions, a 1979 Glynn Academy Alumnus.

9/4/09...Happy Labor Day! Today is early release day (1:20). A couple of reminders...two important pieces of paper went home yesterday with your student. One was on dress code and the other was on the flu. We are really going to start cracking down on dress code, so we could use your help with this. We have been seeing too much skin and that is basically the jist of it. Everyone enjoy the long weekend and be safe!

8/25/09...This will be one of my MOST IMPORTANT newsflashes of the year!!  A letter will come home to you today carried by your student. This letter talks about the new grading policy under block scheduling, ie. how the grades will be weighted. At the 9 week mark (which will be October 8th) your student's grade will be worth 42.5%. At the 18 week mark (December 18) the grade will be worth 42.5% and the final or EOCT will be worth 15%. Here is how it is different: last year, a student could have a "C" at the 9 week mark and work really hard at the end and pull it up to an "A." Now, the "C" will be averaged with the "A".....does that make sense? I hope so, I have tried to simplify it for you all. It is very important that your students know they need to be working diligently right now and they cannot wait until the end. Every grade counts - and please emphasize to them how damaging a zero is to their average. ( time for a simple math activity with the family to show the damage a zero can do!:) There is no reason a student should get a zero on anything!   8/24/09.. The parent portal on infinite campus will be open on Thursday, August 27th. This will allow you to see your students grades in real time.  Please log on to infinite campus if you have not done so. This allows you access to some valuable information - including attendance. Also, please note that the mid-nine week marking period is fast approaching! Can you believe that? The date is September 9th.   8/19/09...Happy Wednesday!  Just wanted you to know that we have something called "Twilight School" that is beginning the week of August 24th.. It will actually start Tuesday, August 25th. Twilight School is every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30. On these days, there will be 4 academic/core teachers that stay after school to help students. It may not be your students teacher, but the help is available and sometimes it is nice to get a different teachers perspective/explanation. On Mondays through Thursdays, all teachers are in the building until 4:00 to help students unless they have a coaching responsibility. Just remember to utilize Twilight School! It can be very beneficial to get that extra help.   8/13/09...For students interested in Science Fair (remember , you do not HAVE to do this, it is optional) If you are interested in doing a science fair project, and you are not currently in a science class, you must see Ms. Ingrid Brown before or after school before August 18th. She is located in the science building on the second floor, room 19.   8/12/09... 1) Picture Day is tomorrow. 2) We are leveling a few classes and making changes as needed. Please bear with us! 3) Hopefully lockers will be assigned by the end of the week. Happy Wednesday!   8/7/09...Okay, 2 days down...:) Here is some useful information: 1) Freshman have had their ID's made for 2 days straight - Everyone is required to wear them on Monday...remember if your student is forgetful, get a spare made...I am happy to keep it in my office. 2) I know lunch has been crowded and slow. We are hoping it is just freshman crowding to one or two lines when there are actually several stations/lines available. Also, as soon as seniors get their platinum cards, they should be able to leave for lunch and that will alleviate some of the crowd. 3) Picture Day is Thursday, August 13th: Freshman will have their pictures made during first block.   Have a great weekend!   8/6/09..... So far so good:) Students are getting ID's made, we will be getting ready to go to lunch in a minute...all is well.  I misspoke a few newsflashes ago....Mr. Ferguson WILL NOT be assigning freshmen their locks/lockers - we will do that ourselves through their homeroom (remember, that is their second block class.) Locker assignment will start probably in the next few days - I will let you know.   8/5/09...good afternoon...Are we excited? Nervous? Just breathe....( I am telling that to myself as well!) Good luck to everyone tomorrow and just be patient. We have made a lot of schedule changes and may need to make a few more. Tomorrow and Friday students will get ID's made and start wearing them on Monday.   8/3/09....Good Afternoon. Just a reminder that our Freshman Academy Open House/Orientation is tomorrow late afternoon/evening beginning at 5:30 to pick up schedules in the GA Auditorium lobby. The program will begin at 6:00 in the auditorium. We are asking students to sit with their first period/first semester teachers (rows will be labeled). After the presentation, we will dismiss to follow a shortened school schedule. Other news as of now: 1)  ID's will be made for freshman on Friday and Monday. We expect them to be worn at all times after that. 2)Locks and lockers will be assigned during lunch ( for several weeks) by Mr. Pat Ferguson - an assistant principal. Please have your student see him during their lunch period (he will have a table set up in cafeteria). We provide the locks, so please do not bring one from home. 3) Please take a moment to review some new policies at GA. One is the Electronic Devices Acceptable Use and another is the Agreement for Success and Behavior form - both of these require a student signature. You may find them on Glynn Academy's Website - on the left hand side under the "Student/Parent" Resources tab - click on forms. That is all for now....if there are any changes/additions - you will be the first to know ;)     7/30/09... Spring Break Dates have been changed. Please go to the Glynn County Schools home page (www.glynn.k12.ga.us) and on the left scroll down to the "Parents and Students" tab click on school calendar.   7/28/09...Information from our fabulous PTSA: The Glynn Academy PTSA-Parent, Teacher, Student Association is calling on all parents, teachers and students-yes...students to become members and volunteers for our PTSA! Thursday, 7:00pm Teens and parents to get straight talk about Georgia laws The Glynn Academy PTSA has arranged for J. Tom Morgan, former DeKalb County (Ga.) district attorney and now a lawyer in private practice, to speak to parents and teens on Thursday, April 16 at 7 p.m. in the school’s Memorial Auditorium. The author of Ignorance Is No Defense: A Teenager’s Guide to Georgia Law, Morgan speaks candidly about Georgia's criminal laws regarding sex, alcohol, drugs and theft. Morgan, who has lectured throughout the United States, Europe, Mexico and Puerto Rico, is the first cousin of local Superior Court Judge Amanda Williams. A question and answer session with the audience will be held after Morgan’s presentation. Morgan will also address Glynn Academy students at an assembly on Friday, April 17. His presentation will help to reinforce GA Principal Dr. Steven Ballowe’s “5 Ds – drinking, drugs, driving, dumb and dead.” As DeKalb County district attorney, Morgan prosecuted the first teenager in Georgia, a 14 year old, as an adult for murder under Georgia's 7 Deadly Sins law. Representing teenagers who found themselves on the wrong side of the law motivated him to write a book that explains Georgia's laws in an easy to understand language for teenagers and parents. Morgan’s book will be available for purchase after the program on April 16, which is being sponsored by the Glynn Academy PTSA with support from Outback Steakhouse. 4/14/09...Sports Physicals on Thursday (April 16th) reminder! I am happy to report that the Freshman Academy passed with flying colors and nothing of interest was found on our students. 3/26/09.."Change in all things is sweet."~Aristotle I know change is difficult and some of you maybe nervous about going to block scheduling, but I know it will be great for all students and offer lots of advantages! One senior mentioned how excited she would be to take journalism and be on the yearbook staff b/c she hasn't been able to do that before! How exciting! Other advantages: more elective options, more academic electives, support classes as needed and credit recovery as needed. Please see the "block scheduling" icon on my website for even more advantages. No prescreening will be done the night of the physicals, so everyone needs to get it back as soon as possible, especially with spring break the week before. Thank you for getting the word out! There has been miscommunication about student ID's and what happens if your student is not wearing one. There will be no warnings, just a write up and detention. Detentions will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the cafeteria from 3:30 until 4:15.(It is necessary to sign in, so i would get there before 3:30!!) Students must have something to do and no talking or tardiness will be tolerated. We started wearing ID's in November, that is why administration feels that no warning is necessary at this time. Thanks for all!! 1/14/08 Several schedule changes have been made. Because of the new graduation requirements, your student must have 4.5 credits to become a sophomore including a complete year in math and a complete year in English. This means 1 full credit in each. To help some of these students we have worked hard to incorporate some of these classes back into their schedules this semester. Some students will have a study skills class to work on recovering math or English credit in addition to their second semester class of math or English. This way students will have an opportunity to earn a full credit in math or English. If your student did not pass AP Human Geography(failed with a 60-69), they can enroll in geography in intercession program (see my "study skills" icon) and earn a 1/2 credit in geography. If a student failed Biology 9A they can recover credit through intercession. Intercession schedules and applications are available in my office and Mr. McCarter's office. We will go into the classrooms this week to explain about the intercession program. I know this is confusing...any questions, please email or call me! 1/10/08....HAPPY NEW YEAR!! 1. Student Check Outs – Any student who needs to leave school for an appointment or funeral must bring a parent signed note, a fax, or an email (gaattendance@glynn.k12.ga.us) to the attendance office prior to the beginning of the school day (phone calls are not accepted). If the student does not drive, a parent or legal caretaker must checkout their son or daughter in the attendance office when checking-out. If the student has their own transportation, they must bring the note to the attendance office prior to the start of the school day. The attendance office is required to contact a parent by phone to verify the early dismissal, regardless of the student’s age. All eighteen-year-old students’ parents will be contacted by the attendance office prior to checking out. If the eighteen-year-old student has become emancipated from his or her parents, an administrator’s signature of approval is required prior to being permitted to checkout and leave. (Eighteen-year-old students WILL NOT be permitted to check in or check out at their leisure under any circumstance. Attendance Notes – In addition to parent hand written notes and fax messages (912-267- 4642), parents can now send attendance notes or early dismissal notes to the attendance office by emailing us at gaattendance@glynn.k12.ga.us, that’s ga (for Glynn Academy) and attendance @ glynn.k12.ga.us! Pre-planned Family Vacations – Typically the school calendar is Board of Education approved and on line month prior to the start of the school year to assist families in planning vacations and other events and activities. In some situations, family vacations can only be scheduled during the school year. To assist students and teachers a Pre-planned Family Vacation form has been developed for Glynn Academy to keep all teachers informed and to assist students in making sure plans are in place for the students to make up any missed school work. 11/16/07: THREE important Announcements: 1) thanks to PTSA moms for breakfast for our Freshman Academy teachers and staff...it was delicious and greatly appreciated!! 2)Grades will be final in December. Three things: 1)DONT FORGET: Tonight at 7:00pm: "State of the School Address" by Mr. Baker (school principal) in the GA Cafeteria...sponsored by the PTSA. 2) Also, the counselors, Mr McCarter and myself, want to start an incentive program for freshman: we want to randomly reward acts of kindness, good manners, highest quiz grade, most improved etc. We would like to go in classrooms and give out rewards for such things. If any of you could donate a gift certificate to a restaurant (McDonalds anything)or maybe a bag or two of m & m's...please let me know. I already have some bowling passes to give out and some bookmarks. These are the types of things we are looking for and we would love your help. Thanks a ton! 3)The band and color guard students are selling cheesecakes, cookie dough, pretzels, and pies to raise money for the band. The deadline is 9/20 to get orders in...to order, see a band or color guard student, Mr. Duke, or call Jean McDonald (266-5718) to place an order. 9/14/07...Homecoming Information!!Have a great and safe weekend! This was a random search - not because anything was going on - purely for safety reasons! I just wanted to let you all know , to try to squelch any rumors. The dogs do alert on medications, so please remind your student to check in all medications with our school nurse. Secondly, our wonderful parent volunteer, Ms. Davis wanted me to post this IMPORTANT MEMO about Homecoming: Calling all Parents: The Glynn Academy Homecoming Parade will be held at 3:30 pm on Friday, September 28th. The parade will take off from Mansfield Street, circle through downtown and return to in front of the cafeteria. This is a wonderful GA tradition. The Class of 2011 is planning to enter a float, as well as to provide marchers and musicians. Help by parents will be needed with the design and decoration of the float, as well as the making of the drums. A flatbed truck (small will do) and a driver is also needed. Students get out of school early on Friday afternoon to help decorate, so the truck must be available around 2:00 pm through 5:30 pm. If you can help during the school day or after school during the week of September 24, or on Saturday afternoon, September 22nd, please email JoAnn Davis at ted@dorcy.com, leaving your name, email address and phone number. Thank you. 9/6/07... Call to parents who want to volunteer in the Freshman Academy. Please go to the PTSA website (www.glynnacademyptsa.com) and click on the volunteer tab. We need volunteers first and last period of the day to help students makeup work that is overdue.( you may sit in the back of a classroom and just make sure your one or two students are working on their overdue work.) Hopefully you could commit to at least 2 days a week for a steady amount of time. Please think about it...we need all freshman to be successful!!:) Thanks for all you do! 9/4/07...Happy 4 day week (for me at least:) Announcement from front office: Please be reminded when you check your student out at 3:00, they will be absent from their last period class for 15 minutes, so this will count as an absence. Also, under my FAQ icon(#18), I have listed the difference between excused and unexcused absences- this too coming from the front office. 8/30/07...a few announcements from the front office: The attendance and nurse's office have moved to Mr. Baker's, the principal's old office. Attendance certificates and ADAP cards will be issued on WEDNESDAYS ONLY! NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!(I believe there is a $3.00 notary fee.)(This is the form to get your learners permit.) There will be NO extended hours in the Media Center on Thursday, August 30 due to Teacher Planning. 8/28/07...Please check out the PTSA's new website: www.glynnacademyptsa.com It is so important to get involved in this great organization! 8/27/07 Good morning! I have added check in/check out procedures for your student on the "FAQ" icon page (question #17). Also, please encourage your freshman to join clubs! And finally, dont forget, Friday, August 31 is an early release day for your student. School will be over at 1:20pm. 8/22/07...Welcome. I have added a lot of email addresses...I now have 439!! Please take a moment to browse through the website -the FAQ icon and the freshman icon have valuable information. We are getting to the lock/locker situation as soon as possible. We are still waiting for more locks to come in. The reason agendas are late is that we moved to a local printer and there has been some delay. The freshman teachers met this morning and we realize there is a need to provide some kind of snack to students in the afternoon since lunch is so early in the day. Mr. Lanham is going to talk to the cafeteria...Free tickets to the Aug 31 game for freshman is being discussed...we are bargaining for more tickets right now it is at the first 200 to show up at the "freshman gate" (I will let you know where this is). Finally...a word on TARDIES...let your student know that with the 3rd tardy, there will be a 50 minute after school detention. That is all for now. Thanks. 8/21/07... Freshman Academy Announcements: 1) Student pictures on Thursday...will take place during English class. 2)Students need to do a better job of picking up their trash outside during lunch. 3)Agendas have been ordered, but it may still be a few weeks away. 4) Football scrimmage game Friday against BHS. Hope you can make it! 8/17/07...We made it to Friday! Some of you may or may not know that we (The Freshman Academy) were lucky enough to receive a second counselor! With such large numbers, it is a GREAT thing. Mr. James McCarter will be the counselor for the Purple and Green Teams...if your student has most of his/her classes upstairs, Mr. McCarter is your man. So please direct scheduling questions, parent teacher conference requests, problems to him. I am the counselor for first floor students (ie. the Yellow and Orange Teams.) I still will be sending ALL of you these email notifications though. Have a great weekend. Mr. McCarters email: mccarter@glynn.k12.ga.us 8/15/07...So far so good! Just breathe! Please go to the FAQ icon (frequently asked questions).I have updated questions #1,15, and 16. Please read them: they address the tardy policy, the cell phone policy , and the student dress code. I want you to be informed, so please read. Thank you! 8/14/07...First day of School tomorrow! PLEASE HAVE YOUR STUDENT REPORT TO THEIR HOMEROOM FIRST!!!This should be listed on the top of their schedule. REPORT TO HOMEROOM FIRST....We will not always do it this way (typically homeroom will be INCLUDED in their second period class) but for tomorrow we need all freshmen to report to homeroom first. If you do not have a schedule, come to guidance in Sidney Lanier Building. Good luck!! We are here to help you! It will be okay:) 8/7/07...PM...There is no school for freshmen on Monday and Tuesday of next week. School starts on the 15th!! Orientation for freshman is this Friday, the 10th. 8/7/07 SCHEDULE CHANGES ONLY IF YOU WANT TO DROP AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY...I realize you dont have access to your schedules yet, but you should know if your child signed up for this AP class. 8/7/07...I have added a lot of new addresses so I wanted to send an email. Also, I have had many schedule change requests...that is fine, but we need you to realize that one change can change the teachers and the rest of your students schedule! That being said, if anyone else out there want to drop AP Human Geography, you need to do it by the end of the day tomorrow (Wed.) b/c this changes your childs team and we are trying to finalize things! Thanks! 8/2/07...Welcome Back! I am officially at work! Important announcement: On August 10th (Freshman Orientation) there will be a Parent Open House that afternoon from 3:00-5:00pm. Once you know your child's team (they will get that information that morning) then you may go to their team in the Sydney Lanier Building and meet everyone...If I hear about anything else...I will let you know! Great to be back at work and I am looking forward to this year! 7/12/07...Important letter can be found on the "Orientation Icon". You will also receive in the mail...but this gives you a heads up! 7/11/07... Welcome. I have added several new addresses, so please read all the newsflashes to get yourself caught up! 7/9/07....Although schedules are on MyGCBE....these may not be final and should not even be on the website yet.We are trying to get them taken off now! The reason being...all the freshman teachers have not been hired yet...so if your childs schedule is online, the classes are correct, but the teachers could change and the order of the classes could change as well. Sorry for this inconvenience and false hope. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer! 6/28/07...MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! On August 10th, we hope to have a Freshman Academy Open House...where freshmen will receive schedules, meet teachers and get to see where everything is...rumor is we may have some kind of lunch/cookout! I say this as tentative info, but I do want you to have the latest info as I have it...I dont have times yet, but if i had to guess it would be morning with a noonish lunch...other fun activities are planned as well. I will keep everyone informed! Hope everyone is enjoying their summer! 6/4/07-Welcome new parents to my website! Please browse the site...Please look at the "Freshman icon"-important dates are already listed! I will update regularly. Please ask your friends if they are on this email list...some email addresses I could not read on the registration form - so I would like you to check with friends to make sure they are getting this valuable tool for communication and information. I check my email regularly and look forward to working with you all. Parents are reminded to establish an account on www.MyGCBE.com, a web site maintained by the Glynn County School System that allows parents to access important information about their child. To establish an account, visit www.MyGCBE.com and follow the steps in the "New Users" box. You will need your students 5 digit pin number.
