GRADING POLICY

Physical Education is a requirement by the state of Georgia for all elementary school students. The state requires that all elementary students meet the standards set by the Georgia State Standards for Physical Education. This year our first, second, and third grade students will be shown the skills necessary for the Physical Education Assessment called Fitnessgram. Students in grades 4th and 5th will take the Fitness Assessment, Fitnessgram in the Spring. Throughout the year students are provided practice and preparation for this test, which is in accordance with Georgia State Standards. With this in mind, it is important that each student comes to PE ready to participate in order to obtain maximum benefit from each lesson the teacher has planned.

The Georgia State Standards for Physical Education states that we want each student to:

1. Demonstrate competency in motor skills and patterns needed to perform a variety of activities.

2. Demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principals, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activity.

3. Participates regularly in physical activity.

4. Achieves and maintains a health enhancing level of physical activities.

5. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others physically.

6. Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self- expression, and/or social interaction.

Grading standards/policy for PE has changed over the last couple of years. Below represents the current policy for grades in PE. In previous years our grading policy was more a reflection of behavior and participation versus a direct reflection of our standards.

Grading:

E - Exceeds

M - Meets

P - Progressing

Please note that E,M, and P do not represent letter nor numeric grades, but represent where the student is in relation to the Standards at that current time.

For clarity - 1st Nine Weeks is typically a review of the previous year standards. As we get into the 2nd nine weeks and into the remainder of the year the expectations and Standards increase. The goal is for the student to meet and exceed all Standards as we progress through the year as they develop skills and concepts to live a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle.
