Policies/Procedures

Important Guidelines for Mrs. Shenk’s classes!

Expectations

I expect all my students to:

  1. Come to class prepared.  Have your book, notebook, homework, pencils, and planner. Do not ask to go back to your locker!!
  2. When you come into my classroom, go directly to your desk and begin the daily reinforcer.
  3. Listen carefully and follow all directions the first time they are given.
  4. Take responsibility for yourself and your actions.  Know that this class, like life, consists of making choices that have both positive and negative consequences.
  5. Be respectful of others – their property, their questions, and their differences.

Book Concerns

All books are to be covered.  Book Sox are available for purchase in the library.  Brown paper bags work well, also.  NO STICK ON COVERS WILL BE ALLOWED!!  The math books are very expensive so be careful how you treat them.

Absences and Make-Up Work –

If you are in class on the day a test, assignment or project is announced, you must be prepared for that on the due date or test date.  If you are absent on the test date, you must make it up the day after you return.  ALL PROJECTS ARE DUE ON THE DUE DATE!  IF YOU ARE ABSENT, THE PROJECT IS DUE THE DAY THAT YOU RETURN.  It is the sole responsibility of the student to check the website for any missed assignments.  It is also the student’s responsibility to ask the teacher what thy missed.  This should be done on the first day the student returns after an absence.  At that time, the student will be informed of the due date for the make-up work.

Medical Conditions

If a student is on any medication, or has specific medical problems (including the need for more frequent restroom privileges) please let me know in writing as soon as possible.

Tutoring-

I offer tutoring to all students before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.  The tutoring begins at 7:10 and ends when the bell rings. If you will be attending tutoring, please let me know so I can issue a hall pass. If students do not have a pass they will not be able to attend tutoring.

Communication

I feel that two-way communication is very important.  I call or email parents for a variety of reasons and hope that parents will take the time to contact me if they have questions or concerns.  My planning time is 7:40 – 9:10.   Please feel free to call during this time at 650-6080 to talk or set up a conference.  At other times you will be able to leave a voice message for me at ext. 334.  Please feel free to email me as well, as it is my preferred method of communication.  My email address is amy.shenk@ccboe.net .

Over the next few weeks, your child will become acquainted with the more specific rules and expectations that I have for my classes.  I look forward to a great year in which your child will learn, grow, and become a more responsible young man or lady.  If teachers, parents, and students will all do their part, then we can reach our goal of having students ready to enter the eighth grade by the middle of May 2007.

Work Standards for Mrs. Shenk’ Math Classes

The following standards apply to all work done for Mrs. Shenk’ Math Classes.  They are to be adhered to at all times, even when Mrs. Shenk is absent.  DO NOT ask a substitute if you have to do these things.  You are to keep these expectations in your notebook and follow them at all times.

  1. All papers must have your name and the date in the top right-hand corner.  If appropriate, the page number, lesson number, and problem numbers should also be included.
  2. All work must be shown at all times!  (Even if you don’t feel that you need to do work, it is expected!)  This includes any “scratch work” that you do.  Do not put scratch work on another sheet of paper.  Show ALL work neatly and organized where you have the problem and the answer.  Answers without appropriate work will receive NO CREDIT!!!!!   If directions include checking your work, then you must also show the checking process as well.
  3. All math work is to be done in PENCIL.  Work is also expected to be legible, which in this case means that Mrs. Shenk can read it.  Work that is not legible will be given back to the student to redo.
  4. If you are caught copying homework or working on homework in another teacher’s class (without the teacher’s permission), the assignment will be taken and you will receive a zero.  If another student is caught with your paper, and you have knowledge of this, you will also receive a zero!
  5. All work is to be kept in an organized and neat notebook.  Notebooks should be in class with you everyday.  Students will be told when the textbook is needed for class. Students will not be allowed to go back to lockers to get any of these items.
  6. Mrs. Shenk does not accept late homework papers
  7. When working in a group situation, you are expected to do your part while controlling your behavior.  If this becomes a problem, you will be removed from the group, given a zero for that assignment, and given an alternative assignment.  Others are depending on you; don’t let them down.

One final note…Mrs. Shenk is here to help you.  While she has many skills and talents, mind reading is not one of them.  She can only help if you ask her for help and then make an honest attempt to learn the material.  Ask for help as soon as you have a problem.  Don’t wait until you’ve buried yourself under a mound of problems.  ANY student can learn math if he/she has the right attitude.  Some areas will be tougher than others will, but the key is to stay calm, keep your focus, and break things down into smaller steps.  If you are willing to put forth a good effort, this year will be one of your best years of math ever!
