Update~December 1st

I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving.  I will begin giving weekly quiz grades over readings done in class.  I feel it is necessary that students read and this is how I plan to approach this.  The students will not be asked to read more than two pages and they will be given atleast 3 questions over that material.  I will collect the quizzes at the end of each week.  This will help will responsibility as well.

Field trip this Friday!

Update~November 5, 2008

Note to parents~ As you know we started unit 3 on Monday and so far I am observing students struggling with the math they are having to learn.  I have had them complete 2 worksheets for practice.  I have graded them; however, the grades are not going in the gradebook.  As we progress, I expect the students to put forth the effort to learn how to solves these problems. Students will have a quiz on Tuesday and Thursday of next week over all of Chapter 9.  They will recieve a study guide the day prior to the quiz.  Next Friday we are going on a field trip.

UNIT 3

Enduring Understanding:

There is a direct relationship between force, mass, motion and how they affect all moving objects in our daily lives

Standards taught:

S8P2b.  Explain the relationship between potential and

              kinetic energy.

S8P3a.  Determine the relationship between velocity and

             acceleration.

S8P3b.  Demonstrate the effect of balanced and

unbalanced forces on an object in terms of

             gravity, inertia, and friction.

S8P3c.  Demonstrate the effect of simple machines

(lever, inclined plane, pulley, wedge, screw, and

             wheel and axle) on work.

S8P5a.  Recognize that every object exerts gravitational

force on every other object and that the force

exerted depends on how much mass the objects

have and how far apart they are.

Essential Questions:

What is the relationship between velocity and acceleration?

What is the relationship between the measurement of speed, acceleration, and velocity?

What are Newton’s three laws and how do they relate to the motion of an object?

What is the difference between mass and weight?

How are kinetic and potential energy related to motion?

What two factors affect gravity?

How does friction play a role in every day life?

What is the relationship between work and power?

What are the advantages of using simple machines?

 How do machines affect efficiency?

What role does mass play in relationship to the forces of motion?
