How can I help my child do better in Language Arts class?

The best way is to help your child set up a regualr study routine
or schedule. Many students believe that since assignments are
from week to week that they really don't have homework on any
given night. This way of thinking gets them in trouble because
they end up waiting until the assignment is due before they
start. Students need to get in the habit of studying 5-7
vocabulary words per night as well as breaking down their grammar
assignment to one or two pages per night. If a book report has
been assigned, they should decide on a certain number of pages or
chapters to read each night depending on other activities such as
practices or games. All of this should not take more than 30 to
45 minutes depending on individual student speed.

My child made much better grades last year than this year, what has changed?

8th grade course material is more difficult for students because
teachers want to make sure that students are ready to handle the
curriculum at the high school. If your student enters high school
without being fully prepared, then we have committed a disservice
to your child.

What are stems?

Stems are parts of words that most people call prefixes,
suffixes, and roots. When students recognize the definition of
separate word parts, they are able to make an educated guess as
to the meaning of any new word they come in cantact with. This is
excellent for reading and/or taking any type of standardized test
requiring word recognition.

What tests will my student have to pass to exit 8th grade?

Students in 8th grade will take the Middle Grades Writing Assessment in January. It is not necessary that this test be passed
in order to go to the High School, but passing it can indicate
how successful your child may be in the high school setting. Many papers are written
in high school subjects and a firm writing foundation is absolutely necessary.
Students must pass the Reading CRCT to pass to High School. Not passing this test will result in retake or possible summer
school or possible retention. The Language arts portion is necessary only to provide
a sound foundation for communication in high school and beyond.
