About the Program:

The Jeff Davis Middle School Project Excite After School Program utilizes
three grade level teachers who staff the homework lab, two highly qualified
teachers in the area of reading and two highly qualified teachers in the
area of math who employ innovative, hands-on, interactive activities
designed to target deficit skills as identified on the most recent CRCT.
In addition, they spend one day per subject area exposing students to
upcoming concepts. (This is called "acceleration" and has been proven to be
one of the most effect tools for improving student learning.) One bi-
lingual parapro also assists ELL students under the direct supervision of
the assigned teacher. Additional staff includes a building level program
director, a data entry clerk, and a media/MAD Center specialist (two days
per week) to facilitate students and their parents in checking out materials
from the MAD Center.

Students rotate through the various centers on a thirty-minute cycle. Our
reading lab provides remediation and acceleration in CRCT reading and other
content area domains, and our math lab provides acceleration and remediation
in CRCT math domains. This instruciton may be computer based or project
based. An enrichment component is provided for students who
complete their homework segment on time. This segment will incorporate mini-
units on areas such as creative writing, safety, and etiquette throughout
the year.

The daily schedule was designed to lend some flexibility to the rotation, so
that those students who need EXTRA time on homework can remain longer in the
homework lab. Since there are three teachers working with homework in the
same area, one teacher can take a child aside for some individual help while
the other two address the group.
