School Counseling found me rather than the opposite. I chanced to try part-
time substitute teaching while I was working on a Masters Degree in
Community Counseling. During this time, I met the school counselor of an
elementary school that frequently called me to work. She showed me the
basics of what she did and I saw how the school children responded to her.
They absolutely loved her and I could see that they soaked in her classroom
guidance lessons because of this! It dawned on me that school counseling
was a perfect marriage of two things that I love; working with children and
counseling. My personal feeling is that children really are our future, so
we better do everything in our power to help them help themselves. We
provide the safe, nurturing environment, the proper tools, guidance, and
encouragement; and the children “learn” to do the rest! They literally grow
up before our eyes. How cool is that? I love my job!
The school counseling program at Johnson Elementary School offers a student-
focused, comprehensive, and developmentally appropriate curriculum. Positive
moral values and accountability are encouraged through social development,
decision-making skills, and academic achievement. Collaboration with
parents, educators, and the community provides educational opportunities to
prepare students to develop into contributing members of our society and
live successful and rewarding lives.
