5th Grade Second 9 weeks

The objectives listed below are the concepts covered in the 2nd Nine Weeks
Unit of study.

Fractions
*	Use <, >, or = to compare fractions and justify
*	Use fractions, proper (3/4) and improper (6/2), and decimals (.75)
        interchangeably
*	Find and simplify equivalent fractions (examples: 1/2, 2/4, 4/8)
*	Find common denominators (example: 3/4 + 1/8 is the same as 6/8 + 1/8
*	Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominator
        such as 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12

Measurement

*	Estimate area of fundamental geometric plane figures
*	Derive area formula of a parallelogram and triangle
*	Find area of triangles and parallelograms using formulae
*	Find area of polygon (regular, equal angle size, and equal length
        sides and irregular, unequal angle size and unequal side length) by
        dividing it into squares, rectangles, and/or triangles and finding the
        sum of the areas
*	Determine that a formula, use variables to represent the unknown
        quantities

Geometry
*	Understand congruence (same size and same shape) of geometric figures
*	Relationship of geometric figures and vertices, sides, and angles

Some fun things to do at home:

Fractions in the Real World
Collect example of fractions from books, magazines and newspapers. You can
find many examples in recipes, business listings, and craft instructions.
When you find a fraction, add it to a chart with columns labeled:

less than 1/2;

between 1/2 and 1;

greater than 1.

Ask your child to explain how he or she knew
where to put each fraction in the chart.

Compare fractions. Have your child put them in order from least to greatest.

Working with Fractions
Your child is learning to add, subtract, and multiply fractions. To add or
subtract fractions such as 1/3 + 1/2, you have to find an equivalent for each
fraction that has the same denominator. Here is an activity you can try
to help your child practice this skills.

Renaming Game

Step 1 Begin by stating a fraction, such as 1/3.
Step 2 Take turns naming equivalent fractions (2/6, 3/9 and so on).
Step 3 When neither player can think of an equivalent fraction, start again
          with a new fraction.
