Groups and Individual Counseling

SMALL GROUP COUNSELING

The counseling department offers a variety of support groups throughout the school year for students who have common interests or concerns.
The counselors receive referrals for these groups from parents, teachers, and administrators. In order for a child to be in a group, we must have
parent/guardian permission on file. Typically, groups meet 30 minutes, once a week for six to eight weeks. Depending on the needs of our students, these groups may include, but are not limited to the following:

          Peer Relations
          Changing Families
          Social Skills
          Anger Management
          Self-Esteem
          Grief/Loss
          Study/School Success Skills

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELINIG

There are times when students may need to see the school counselor on an individual basis. Personal, social, and academic counseling are available to all Lewis students during the school day. Parents or teachers may refer a student to see us or the student may ask to speak with us directly. Sessions are kept confidential except when students disclose that they are being hurt, are hurting someone else, or want to hurt themselves. If the student shares other information that we feel the teacher or parent needs to be aware of, we will discuss it with the child and contact the pertinent parties. To clarify our role, it should be noted that individual counseling is not therapeutic in nature, as it is beyond the role of the school counselor to conduct in-depth, on-going individual sessions. If we feel that a student would benefit from further counseling services, we may refer him for a support group at school or make other recommendations to the parents.

If you feel that your student would benefit from either of these services please call your child's counselor.
