HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We are all rested and ready to begin the second half of the school year.
This first week of our return has us learning about the changes our 5th Grade
students can expect as they grow into their adolescence through the Human
Growth and Development classes on Tues. and Wed., Jan. 5th and 6th.

In science we will be completing our study of Matter, specifically Physical
and Chemical Changes of matter. This will end with a test and the optional
accelerated projects your child may have opted to due. I promise this is the
last change in the due date for these projects is Friday, Jan.15th. Then we
will enter our study of Electricity and Magnetism. This is fun.

In Social Studies we will be "moving out west" with Westward Expansion,
Transcontinental Railroad, the growth of monopolies and industrialists, the
immigration to America from foreign countries, and finally our Immigration
Day experience. This date will be announced soon.

In math we wiil be covering a difficult and expansive group of geometry
skills, such as volume and its formula, finding area and its formula, angles,
congruency, standard measurement and metric measurement.

Reading will continue with books integrated to our Social Studies and Science
studies. In English we will be studying verbs, prepositions, and adverbs.
Writing will find us learning to persuade our readers with persuasive writing
techniques.

Don't forget to practice CRCT questions with the site and password tests that
were sent home earlier in the year. The fifth grade teachers will be
assigning weekly CRCT Online Tests that must be completed by our students
soon. Watch for this list of dates, tests, and directions to practice CRCT
skills for the upcoming test in April.

There will be loads of fun activities at school this month...watch for them
in Friday Folders and in my calendar section of this site.

Here's to a healthy, learning filled 2010!
