Curriculum

The Prekindergarten students continue to learn and practice many new skills
with our Everyday Mathematics curriculum. We will be working on recognizing
numbers 0 to 10, performing rote-counting activities, and sorting and
classifying objects by their attributes. We will also practice recognizing
and copying patterns and geometric shapes and comparing objects by size,
weight, height and length. These activities will help to widen our
mathematical vocabulary by using comparison words like bigger, taller, longer
and heavier.

The literacy and handwriting programs for the upcoming weeks are as follows:

Scott Foresman Unit 2: Who Lives Here?

 Week 1 - Sweet Dreams: How Animals Sleep Oct. 12 - 16
Our story is about animals and where they sleep. We will learn that
some animals sleep in trees, some sleep with their eyes open and some animals
sleep standing up. We will make a bed and talk about where we sleep! The
children will draw animals sleeping in a barn and count animal legs by 2’s.
Our letter this week is A. We will sponge paint an alligator and make an
anthill.

Week 2 – What Do You Do With a Tail Like This? Oct. 19 - 23
This week our story is about how animals use their body parts for
different things. Bats use their ears to hear, platypuses use their noses to
dig in the mud, and scorpions use their tails to give a nasty sting! Our
letter of the week is S. We will make a snake, a squirrel, a spider web, and
have Sports Day! Our special snack this week will be smores.

Halloween Week, Oct. 26 – 30
Our Halloween projects will include a haunted house, a spooky number
book, a spider web, a scare crow, and a Christian pumpkin hat. We will carve
a pumpkin and talk about seeds and how pumpkins grow for a science lesson.
This week we will also have our fall performance of songs and poems along
with Grandparents Day/Special Friends Day for our families.

Week 3 – Cassie’s Word Quilt Nov. 2 - 6
Our story this week shows us many things in the city. We will talk
about apartments, parks, and subways. Our projects will include a word
quilt, a paint pallet, and we will draw our favorite place. The letter of
the week is P. We will make a pet shop, a penguin, a pumpkin project, and
have Pet Day.

Week 5 – Fishy Tales Nov. 9 - 13
This week we will learn about animals that live in the sea. Sea
creatures swim, crawl, and float. Fishy Tales has many different plants and
animals that live in the sea. We will learn about coral, clams, fish,
turtles, sea horses, starfish, jellyfish, sharks, octopuses, crabs, rays,
dolphins, and eels. Letter I is the letter of the week. We will watch ice
melt, make an alphabet igloo and an ice cream project. Guess what we will
have for a snack?

Week 4 – Over in the Meadow Nov. 16 - 20
Over in the Meadow is the classic rhyme about animals and their babies.
