Do you need any help?

Please feel free to contact our room parent at any time if
you are interested in volunteering in the classroom. There are
many opportunities including, but not limited to: Stuffing
folders, organizing celebrations, class projects, making copies,
and parent readers.

When and why do parents sign the agendas?

Parents are responsible for signing the agenda each night. I
certainly understand that things come up; however, this small act
is a large transition process to teaching them the life long tool
of being organized. Please check your child's agenda each night
confirming that the homework has been checked by you, your child
has read for 20 minutes or more that night, and you have checked
the comments area for any teacher feedback. I will be checking
the agenda each morning for parent signatures and parent
comments. The agenda is our best form of communication between
the parent, teacher, and your child.

What are check-in and check-out procedures?

A written excuse is needed when a child is absent from school.
This excuse is due upon the day your child returns. The note
should include child's name, date, parent's name, date of
absence, and explaination of the absence.
Tardy students must be signed in, by the parent, in the front
office if your child is not in the classroom by 7:55 a.m. Our
class goal is to have every student in the classroom by 7:45 to
provide time to take care of personal business before school
starts.
Early check-out will require a parent visit to the front office.
Please be prepared to show your photo identification and the
front office will call for your child. Plese send a written note
stating what time your child will be picked up so we can do our
best to help him/her be packed and ready.

How do I change my child's dismissal?

Please discuss with your child how he/she will be going home each
day. My suggestion is to list how your child is going home each
day in the "After School" section of the agenda when you sign it
daily. This section can empower your child at dismissal time when
questions often arise. Children often become concerned about how
they will get home in third grade since we begin transferring
that responsibility to them.
Permanent changes in dismissal should be sent in a written note
including the child's name, date, old dismissal procedure, new
dismissal procedure, and parent's name.
All other changes in dismissal require a written note stating the
child's name, date, parent's signature, and the day's dismissal
procedure.
Situations sometimes cause changes in dismissal during the day.
Please hand deliver a written note to the front office of any
last minute changes in your child's dismissal and they will
deliver the information to class at a time which will not
interrupt instructional time.

When and how can I celebrate my child's birthday at school?

You are welcome to bring in cookies, cakes, etc. that are ready
to serve to the class in celebration your child's birthday. Lunch
in the lunchroom is the very best time and place to share
birthdays. It is helpful if everything is cut and ready to serve
before it is brought into school as time is short. Please notify
me atleast one day in advance about the type of snack you will be
providing so we can accommodate you. Finally, Please check the
class allergy section of this website for any dietary
restrictions.

When can my child go to the library?

Students may go to the library before 7:45 a.m. or when classwork
is complete during seatwork. The children list thier name on the
board if they need to visit the library that day so we can make
sure they have an opportunity to go. We will also try and go to
the library as a class once every two weeks.

Does my child have to read an Accelerated Reader book?

My goal is that your child should be reading 1 AR book in thier
reading level and pass the test with 80% or highter every two
weeks. Longer chapter books are a great challenge and are
encouraged to be read in addition to meeting reading goals. Every
child has a reading range with numerous books to chose from. The
AR tests serve as a good check for everyone involved to know how
well your child is reading and comprehending a book. This
information gained will help us all set appropriate individual
reading goals in support of the students becoming a better reader.

Can my child read other books besides AR books?

The media center permits third graders to check out 2 books at a
time which provides the students with ample opportunities to read
other books of interest too. Ms. Schmidt and I work together to
try and instill a love for reading.

Does an AR book have to come from the school library?

You are welcome to visit the Murdock website and check to see if
a book from your home or public library is an AR book and its
level. Make sure the book is consistent with the title, author,
and date since some books might be slightly different.

How do I contact you regarding questions and concerns?

The students are welcome to ask questions throughout the day
except in the hall or when I am already speaking to someone else.
The best way for parents to reach me is through the agenda.
Little notes of paper seem to get misplaced. Email is a valuable
tool for longer or more personal questions. I will do my best to
respond to all emails as soon as possible. The county sometimes
do system updates which can interfere with communication so make
sure you re-send the email if you do not hear from me
within 24 hours. I will always send a response to emails to
varify my receipt of the message. Please keep in mind that I do
not check emails when I am teaching as well as during family
time. Sometimes, life gets in the way so send me a written note
stapled in the agenda if you do not receive a response to your
email.
