Dear Parents,
First of all, my apologies for the many emails coming your way these days. I want to ensure that everyone is in the loop of current happenings at all times. The end of October through Christmas is always a crazy, packed, fun-filled time at school, so please forgive us for all of the information we will need to share in the upcoming weeks! :)
Tuesday, November 22nd is Grandparents Day (or Special Friends Day if grandparents cannot come - aunt/uncle/godparent/parent). Please send pre-addressed and pre-stamped envelopes for anyone your child is inviting to join him/her on Grandparents Day either tomorrow or no later than Monday. We will begin our festivities promptly at 8:30 am to allow visitors to make it to the main campus by 10 am for older siblings musical performances. We will dismiss from Grandparents Day activities that morning. No lunch is served and no After Care is provided that day. You will be free to begin your Thanksgiving holiday after our morning program.
Please remember that we are collecting empty boxes to use in our communities project if you have any ready to be tossed. Empty cereal, cracker, oatmeal, granola bar, etc. boxes are great. We need all sizes!
A big thank you for a great Fun Run yesterday! Your children did a fantastic job. Thanks for all of your help!!

Dear Parents,
Monday, October 31st is our EYC Saints Parade at 8:45 am. Please remember to send in your photo book and saint cards if you haven't already. Extra parking is available across River Green Pkwy (across the street from the doctor offices adjacent to us). If you are available, we would love for you to join us for the parade. Please help your child prepare for presentations to their classmates by learning 3 facts about their saint. Feel free to stay after the parade to listen to presentations if you wish. Children may come out of uniform in orange and black for Halloween under their saint costume to be worn after the parade.
The Annual Fun Run (iDash) is on Wednesday! Please join us on the fields at the main campus and cheer us on or run with us if you can! We will depart in buses at approximately 8:45 am. The Fun Run will begin at 9 am. If you are checking your child out directly from the Fun Run, please see Mrs. Quinn or me before you leave to sign your child out. Your child does not need to bring a book bag on Wednesday. Only a water bottle. If your child returns to the EYC with us, dismissal is at 11:45 am. After Care will be held for those enrolled in the program. If you child is staying for After Care, you must provide a lunch that day.
Next week we will review all sight words learned so far. Our letter/sound focus will be "Pp". Our Unit of Inquiry on Communities continues while we learn about different community helpers. In the upcoming weeks all kindergarten classes will be creating communities in our rooms. If you have any empty boxes (cereal, snacks, etc) we need all sizes to create these communities. Please send them in!
Don't forget to place your Scholastic Book Club order online (or send in the paper version to us). The website is scholastic.com/bookclubs. The Class Activation Code is GRTGJ. Orders are due by Tuesday, November 1st. These make great gifts! This will be our last order before Christmas, so please order now for Christmas presents! We are happy to make arrangements to get the books to you secretly in order to give them as gifts if you wish. Just email us to let us know when you are ordering as a gift, and we will make arrangements with you when they arrive (usually within 2 weeks of placing the order). Thanks to all for your support, as this helps us purchase books and supplies for our classroom!
I have 6 drivers for our field trip to Great Harvest Bread Company on Monday, November 7th. If you are planning to join us, please let me know. We can take as many parents as would like to come.

Dear Parents,
Please remember that tomorrow is Picture Day at the EYC! Please have your child dressed in the full NDA winter uniform for pictures.
Thank you to all who have notified me of which saint your child will dress up as on Monday. If you have not already, please do this as soon as possible. Please remember to send in your photo book and saint cards as well. Our Saints Parade will begin on Monday at 8:45 sharp. If you are available, we would love for you to join us for the parade. Please help your child prepare for presentations to their classmates by learning 3 facts about their saint. Children may come out of uniform in orange and black for Halloween under their saint costume to be worn after the parade.
This week we will learn new sight words am, have, girl, boy, and at. Our letter/sound focus will be "Ee". Our Unit of Inquiry on Communities continues while we learn about different types of communities both in the United States and worldwide. Thank you to all families that were able to send in letters to our troops! I will be delivering all letters on Thursday.
As the weather gets a bit colder and more outerwear begins to come in please, please remember to label all outer garments (jackets, vests, sweaters, etc) as your child brings them in. This will help us solve the daily mystery before carpool time.
Don't forget to place your Scholastic Book Club order online (or send in the paper version to us). Orders are due by Tuesday, November 1st. These make great gifts! October 14, 2011
Dear Parents,
Your children did a fantastic job with returning books and reading logs in their ziploc reading bags this week! Please use the booklet that came home as a guide for additional homework your child can do if you wish. You can choose to keep this booklet inside the bag or at home in a place where it won't get lost. You will find a list of high frequency words for your child to work on knowing by sight. Please remember that books will come home most, but not all, days. Books are never sent home on Fridays. This year, all kindergarten classes are going to focus mostly on sending books home on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, but don't be surprised if you sometimes see them on Mondays.
This week we focused on the letter Ll and the sight words me, and, an, is, and the. Next week we will focus on the letter Rr, and the sight words red, three, my, said, and if. Our math unit on shapes will continue. Ask your child what 3D shapes they know. They may just sing a song to you! :)
This week we began a new Unit of Inquiry, "We Are One, We Are Many", about communities and community helpers. The Duluth Police Officers came to visit our school on Monday, and they brought several police cars and Officer Alf from the K-9 unit! Today we had a visit from the local H.E.R.O. Unit. Ask you child what number we need to call if we need the H.E.R.O. Unit's assistance on the road. In the upcoming weeks we will get to meet some other community helpers such as local firefighters, and we will take a trip to the bakery to learn more about bakers. In an effort to thank some of our community helpers, we will be writing letters at school to our troops as part of "Bert's Big Thank You". Please refer to the letter that came home a few weeks ago. Our goal is to have 1000 sent from NDA. The Bert Show's goal is to have 400,000 letters total. That is one for every military man or woman that will be overseas at Thanksgiving. Please consider having your family members write additional letters at home. I need all letters here by Monday, October 24th. More details and specifications can be found at
http://thebertshow.com/the-bert-shows-big-thank-you/.
Please remember that we have mass on the main campus this Monday, October 17th. We are missing 6 permission slips, so please make sure to send yours in on Monday if you haven't already. Without these slips, we will be unable to transport your child to the main campus to join our class for mass. Please remember to send in a LABELED car seat for your child that day. We could very much use additional drivers and parents to join us at mass on Monday. It is very helpful to have parents sit with our class, as this is a new experience for students to go to the big campus where they will sit up front and participate throughout the duration of the mass. Thank you so much to our drivers for Monday! They are Mrs. Marquez, Mrs. Barcena, Mrs. Naso, and Mrs. McDonough. Please let me know if you are available and would like to join us. We would greatly appreciate having you there!
Please remember winter uniform started on Tuesday. Please send your child in with their vest on each day. They will be permitted to take their vest off if they get too warm. Also, please remember that on Fridays children may choose to wear any khakis and any NDA spirit wear shirt.
A big thank you to Mrs. Quinn for continuously updating our pics! They are up to date on the Picassa website with pictures as recent as today! Be sure to check them out!

September 30, 2011
Dear Parents,
We had another great week in kindergarten at NDA! I am looking forward to meeting with each of you next week for conferences. A separate individual conference time reminder email will follow.
We will continue next week with our standalone science unit, "Bodies and Senses". We have now covered letter/sounds t, b, f, and n. Next week we will work on m and a. The sight words that we have learned so far are I, like, to, see, a, you, can, go, play, on, red, blue, pink, green, and brown, as well as our number words from one - ten. Please reinforce recognition of these words at home if your child does not know them. Making sight word flash cards to use in the car during downtime, etc is very helpful!
Thanks to all who participated in our September Book Club Order! We will notify you when the books arrive. Our class pictures are located on a Picasa page to protect students whose parents wish for them not to be posted on the web. The site is password protected so that only our class parents can access the pictures. The site is located at
www.picasaweb.com. Please contact me if you cannot locate the email with the login and password. Mrs. Quinn has graciously agreed to take-on this job, and she will update photos periodically. Thanks Mrs. Quinn! :)
Please don't forget that Wednesday, October 5th is an out of uniform day for those who have contributed to the 2011-2012 Annual Fund. Please remember that this Wednesday is NOT a half-day as normal for the first Wednesday of the month. Friday is a half-day, and after care will not be provided. Dear Parents,
Happy 1st Day of Fall! We have concluded our PYP Unit of Inquiry, "Decisions, Decisions". We will be starting our standalone science unit, "Bodies and Senses", on Monday. Please look for the introductory letter coming home today. We will also begin a new math unit next week, so please also look for that letter in your folder today.
We have now covered letter/sounds t, b, and f. The sight words that we have learned so far are I, like, to, see, a, you, can, go, play, and on. Please reinforce recognition of these words at home if your child does not know them.
Monday is the final day to submit Scholastic Book Orders! Please place yours online this weekend, or you can also send a paper and check order in on Monday. Mrs. Quinn will submit the order on Tuesday morning. To order online, please go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. Our class activation code is GRTGJ. Thanks to those that are able to participate this month.
Housekeeping Notes:
- Occasionally in kindergarten we still have accidents, or we just get wet or excessively dirty on the playground. If you haven't already, we would love for you to send in a spare set of clothes in a ziploc bag that we can keep in your child's cubby. This does not need to be an extra uniform. A pair of underwear, socks, a plain t-shirt, and solid shorts would be good to have on hand in case of these emergencies.
- As we get further into the season for illnesses, please remember to practice healthy habits at home. We are working on good hand-washing practicies, coughing/sneezing into our elbow, keeping hands/fingers/pencils/etc out of our mouths and noses, and we would love for you to remind your children of these healthy habits at home. Please refer to the NDA Attendance Policy on pg. 16 of the Handbook for more information. The policy states, "There are many reasons to keep your child at home due to illness. If your child has a fever greater than 100.0F he/she should not come to school. The child needs to be free of a fever without the use of fever reducing medications for 24 hours prior to returning to school. If your child has a contagious disease, your child should not come to school. Students who do not come to school are not permitted to attend any after school activities. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school nurse."

Dear Parents,
Thank you so much for joining us at Curriculum Night last night! It was wonderful to see all of you. Thank you again to our Room Moms, Kerianne Maloney and Patti Marquez, for all of their assistance with the sign-ups. If you were unable to attend, you will receive an email of the PowerPoint today. Your folder of info will come home with your child today (or if you are out of town you will get it when your child returns).
This week we introduced our first sight words: I, like, to, see, and a. Please reinforce these sight words at home with both recognition and correct spelling of the sight word. We have also been working on number word recognition and correct spelling of number words from one to ten. The handwriting letters and sounds that we have covered so far are “t” and “b”.
Please let me know if you are available to join us and drive for mass this coming Monday, September 19th. Mass drivers are asked to report at 10 am to the EYC with a copy of your drivers license and insurance card. We should return to campus at approximately 11:30/11:45. Please be mindful of the changes to the Georgia Booster Seat Law that went into effect on July 1, 2011. Children under age 8 must ride in an approved car seat or booster. A child under age 8 and weighing at least 40 lbs is not exempt from the law. We need all students to provide us with a LABELED booster or car seat upon drop-off (unless their parent will be driving and will keep it in their car) on Monday morning. We will not be able to transport students to the main campus unless a booster or car seat is provided. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. For more information on the law, please visit www.gahighwaysafety.org.
Please remember to submit your Scholastic Book Club orders! This is a huge help to our classroom and a great way to purchase books for your child. To order online please go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. Our class activation code is GRTGJ. All book orders are due September 26.
We wish Nicholas Naso a big “Happy Birthday!” today!

September 9, 2011
Dear Parents,
Please don't forget about the EYC Parent Social held at the cafeteria on the main campus from 7-9 pm tonight. We look forward to seeing you there!
Yesterday we sent home our first Scholastic Book Order in the folders. Your children circled books that interested them the most. If you are able to place an order, please know that not only are the books priced at a discount, but we earn points to purchase books for our classroom with each order. Every order, no matter if it is one book or twenty, is greatly appreciated. Orders may either be submitted online or you may fill out the forms and send in one check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs.
We need mass drivers for September 19th! If you are able to arrive at the EYC at 10 am, sit with us at mass, and then drive students back to our campus at approximately 11:30/11:45, please let me know! We will need a copy of your drivers license and proof of insurance for all drivers. All students needing a car seat for transportation will need to send in their labeled car seat at drop-off that day.
Thanks to all who have completed our "Summer Project"! The "All About Me" book will begin being sent home today. If you haven't had a chance to send in your child's pages, please still do so, and we will add them to the book. Each family will have the opportunity to take the book home for 2 school nights. Please return the book after 2 nights in the "Project Bag" it will come home in. Please take good care of this book, as our families have worked very hard to create these pages. This is a great way for our families to get to know all the students in our class.
Today we will also begin our Star of the Week. One student will be randomly selected each week by drawing names out of a bag, and that student will receive instructions to fill out a provided poster and fill up a bag with their favorite things to share throughout the week. One student will receive the bag each Friday, and the student will return it to school filled with their things on Monday. The bag of their favorite things will remain at school for the entire week.
Curriculum Night is this Thursday, September 15th, at 7 pm. Please make sure to join us. If you are unable to make it, please let me know.
We have one class need: hand soap. We could use two hand soap pumps and large containers of refill soap. We go through tons of soap to try to keep those germs away! :)

September 2, 2011
Dear Parents,
Here are a few friendly reminders for the upcoming weeks:
- Please send in your child's pages for our "Summer Project" book by next Friday. We will begin sending the book home with students the following Monday.
- Please return all outstanding library books on Tuesday. Normally when we have school on Mondays, that will be our day to checkout books. We ask that the books are returned by Monday mornings (again, Tuesday this week) in order for your child to checkout another book that week.
- Wednesday, September 7th is a half-day for teacher in-service. Dismissal is at 11:45 am. If your child is staying for after care they must bring a lunch. This is also our first "Can the Khakis" Day for our monthly half-day Service Learning projects. Your children may "Can the Khakis" and wear jeans with NDA spirit wear if they participate in the following project on Wednesday.
First Grade Service Project: helping to provide the Ronald McDonald house with snacks for families staying there. Please bring in snack size servings of potato chips, pretzels, microwavable snacks, etc.
- Friday, September 9th: EYC Parent Social from 7-9 at the main campus. Hope to see all of you there!
- Thursday, September 15th: Curriculum Night at the EYC. 7 pm.
- Friday, September 16th: Happy Birthday Nicholas Naso!!! :)
- Monday, September 19th: Mass at the Main Campus - 10:30 am. I will need 5 volunteer drivers for this mass. Please let me know if you are available to help drive students to and from the main campus and sit with us at mass. (We will leave here at 10 am and we should return at approximately 11:30/11:45 am.)
Have a safe, fun holiday weekend!

August 26, 2011
Dear Parents,
We had great first full week in kindergarten! We have been working hard to establish our Essential Agreements (class rules) and our classroom procedures. Your children have been through center rotations during mornings and afternoons, and they are definitely getting the hang of things in K! We have begun our first IB PYP Unit of Inquiry, "Decisions, Decisions" and our first math unit. Information on both of these units was sent home in the Thursday folders yesterday.
Please remember to complete the Kindergarten Summer Project with your child as soon as you are able so that we can begin sending the book home to give your family a chance to get to know all the children in our class. Thank you to those who have sent them in. The link to the project info is located under the "Summer Project" tab of our class website.
http://teacherweb.com/GA/NotreDameAcademy/WhitneyHess/index.html
Here a few additional important reminders:
- Please remember to send in a healthy snack for your child daily. We are still in need of extra snacks for those times that a snack is forgotten, so please send some in if you wish.
- Please send a labeled water bottle for your child to hydrate daily. It is still very hot outside, and the children spend a total of one hour outside each day between PE and recess. Also remember that the boys summer uniform calls for the khaki shorts.
- Headphones were on the supply list. If you have not already, please send in a set of headphones for your child (any will do). We use these in technology centers on a daily basis.
- Wednesday, September 7th is a half-day. Dismissal will be at 11:45 am. After Care is still held on half-days, but please remember to send your child with a lunch if they are staying for After Care. Hot lunch is not provided on half-days. (For those not staying for After Care, we do not eat lunch at school on half-days.)
- EYC Parent Social was rescheduled for Friday, September 9th at 7 pm on the main campus.
- Curriculum Night will be held Thursday, September 15th at 7 pm. Please note that Curriculum Night is for parents/guardians only (not students).

Meet and Greet
Wednesday, August 17th
9 am - 11 am
August 14, 2011
Dear Parents of Miss Hess and Mrs. Quinn’s 2011-2012 Kindergarten Class,
Welcome to Kindergarten at Notre Dame Academy, and welcome to our class! Mrs. Quinn and I are honored to have your children in our class this year. We are looking forward to a wonderful and exciting year together with you and your family. Meet and Greet will be held this Wednesday, August 17th between 9:00 am and 11:00 am. (You are not required to wear school uniform. :))
We have made an effort to contact each of you this evening by telephone. If I did not reach you but was able to reach your voicemail, you will find that you have a message welcoming you and reminding you about Meet and Greet. I found a few numbers that were not working or current, so I will make sure that I get a good contact number from you on Wednesday.
At Meet and Greet you will be required to spend some time filling out various forms for the school. We ask that you please fill these out accurately as we will use them to contact you in case of emergency. You will also receive a packet with some general information regarding snacks/lunch/carpool etc.
