Physics -- Fall 2010 Dr. Rietveld, Room 99 jerry.rietveld@cobbk12.org Several acceptable answers to the question: “What is physics?” The word physics comes from a Greek word meaning "knowledge of nature." Physics is the most fundamental of all natural sciences. Physics is a science based upon experimental observations and analysis. Physics attempts to describe how and why our physical environment behaves as it does. Physics attempts to reveal nature's underlying simplicity and beauty using as few laws as possible. Physics serves as a foundation for other sciences. Physics is the study of the material Universe, from the exceedingly small to the incredibly large. Expectations: Be an empowered student, in other words, come prepared to initiate and participate. Learn by doing, thinking, and interacting. Always respect the rights of your classmates to a positive learning environment. Missing and damaged equipment will have to be paid for by those deemed to be responsible. Textbook Physics: Principles and Problems (2009) (replacement cost of textbook is $71), e-version also available Background and introductory material (characteristics of science) units of measurement (prefixes and metric system) measurement skills (conversions and calculations) graphing and data analysis (TI-80ish calculator) math skills (scientific notation, equations, algebra/trig) Topics likely to be covered Mechanics (kinematics and dynamics) Energy and Momentum Thermal Physics Electricity and Magnetism Mechanical and Electromagnetic Waves Nuclear and Modern Physics Grading Labs, Quizzes, On-line Assignments (about 55%) Tests (about 35%) End of Term Exam (about 10%) On-line tasks will be assigned throughout the semester. Late submissions for the on-line assignments will not be accepted. All tests are designed to be completed in about thirty minutes, however, the full period will be available if needed. A point system will be used to determine your grade. Cheating will be treated as an unacceptable offense and will carry a severe penalty. PHS Grading Scale: A (90 and up) B (89 to 80) C (79 to 74) D (73 to 70) F (69 and down)
