| I am a ceramic sculptor. These works are hand built and tediously carved.
Sometimes my students say, "Wow Ms. Julia! You should be an artist!" When I
hear this, I can help them to understand what it means to be a working artist
in terms of career. Sometimes my students have visited me at art shows. They
get a big kick out of that!
The Velveteen Rabbit busts above are inspired by the children's story by
Margery William's. Carved into the base is an excerpt from her book about
being 'real'. The Velveteen Rabbit is one of my favorite stories.
The extruded pieces below are my Fish Head series. I do not use glazes. This
helps in my clay work with students because glaze and extra firing time can
get very expensive. It helps to know other techniques for color finishing on
clay. The heart cavity of the Fish Head series is strung with copper wire. I
want my work to inspire curiosity and joy.
