Ooh la la...

Here are some of the benefits of French in the elementary school:
*French is considered the second most influential language in the world.
*Children gain authentic French pronunciation easily before the age of ten.
*Children have higher standardized test scores in reading, math, and language
arts.
*Children develop a sense of cultural openness to other people.

---FIRST GRADE---

Bonjour!! The holiday season is here. I can’t believe we are already well
into December. The 1st graders have been enjoying our experience in Québec
with Grégoire la Grenouille. The students have been creating pointillist
works of art, looking at fall clothing and sharing
information about families and pets.

This week the students received their third invitation from Sophie la Vache.
Our next travels will take us to Switzerland. The 1st graders will have an
opportunity to experience some of the holiday traditions in Europe—leaving
shoes out for small presents, stories, songs, and yule log cake.

We will spend December looking at holiday traditions, studying numbers
(70-100), and learning about winter clothing, winter weather, and rooms of the
house.

Happy Holidays!

Most of Europe celebrates St. Nicholas Day on Saturday, December 6th. The 1st
graders joined in on the festivities last week as well. They sampled
traditional holiday treats of gingerbread and hot chocolate. Merci beaucoup
to our French food volunteers for the month—Beth Rich, the Hurtado family,
Shanna Smith, and Sheri Ruiz.

---FIFTH GRADE---

We have recently finished our Visages 3 unit, “Pauvre Alphonse!”. The 5th
graders did a great job describing people precisely and accurately. As a
culminating project, the 5th graders created a wanted poster of an imaginary
criminal in which they used the vocabulary and expressions that they worked
with through out the theme.

This month, we began a new unit called “Au Restaurant.” In this theme,
students find out what it is like to work as a waiter in a restaurant. As
waiters, the students must learn public-relation skills, including the proper
way to deal with and talk to customers, and they must become familiar with all
the soups, salads, beverages, main courses, and desserts that are on the menu.
The 5th graders will learn to listen to and note requests quickly, yet
carefully, so that they do not make mistakes. Through a variety of
communicative activities, the students will practice both giving and taking
orders, and using language appropriate to a restaurant situation.

I look forward to continuing the foreign language experience with the 5th
graders at the new campus in January. The French team will still be
travelling on carts and providing instruction in the classrooms. Our
intermediate campus office will be located on the first floor near the
media center.

Happy Holidays!

Miam! Miam!------
This month, the 5th graders sampled bûche de noël (yule log). Merci beaucoup
to our French food volunteers for the month—Doroda Groch-Miller, Darby Tracey,
Sheila Parsons, and Traci Piovesan.

Please let me know if your student has any food allergies, so we can make
accommodations if necessary.
