How can I help at home?
The best way is to spend time with your child. If they need help you should
help them but not solve the problems for them. It is crucial to be a part of
this process to show that you will help and you care about their education.
Listed below are some ways you can help at home.
Reading:
Read with your child every night at least 15 minutes
Review phonics sounds at least 3 times a week
Practice the phonics story with your child by asking them the new rule on
Monday of each week
Practice reading signs on the way home
Practice finding sight words in the newspaper
Keep favorite books in the car
Visit your local library
Ask them questions (inferencing and comprehension skills)about what they have
read
Math:
Review basic facts by using flash cards
Create questions in "real life"- If you have a dozen cookies and eat three,
how many do you have left? etc...
Encourage them to count out loud, by 2's, 5's, and 10's
Ask which numbers are in the tens place, ones place adn hundreds place
Ask children to point out odd and even numbers during a card ride

Encourage children to pay for items and count out money. It will be a great
help to practice counting and giving change at home from a dollar and slowly
move to a higher quantity.
