Throughout the year, we will be learning various Red Words, or sight words. These are words that cannot be sounded out and must be memorized. You will notice that some words appear more than once, and will be reviewed during that time. In addition to the words you see below, we will also be learning to read and write color words and number words.
There are several ways you can help your child learn to spell and read these words. I have listed a few ideas below.
- Look for these words in the community. (grocery store, doctor's office, street signs, etc.)
- Search for these words in books. Record the number of times the word appears using tally marks.
- Play Bingo with the words.
- Play Memory with the words.
- Unscramble the letters in the words.
- Create sentences using the words.
- Rainbow write the words. Allow your child to write the words using different colors of markers and crayons.
- Create the words using stamps or magnet letters.
- Create a cheer or song to spell the words.
- Use flashcards to review the words.
The progression of red words is to be used as a guide, but is subject to change.
