Notes From Ms. Ferguson

~Picture Make-up Day: Picture Day is Wednesday Nov. 18. Please return the
form that is coming home today if you’d like your child to participate.

~ Math Test: We will have our Ch. 4 math test on Thursday. Review sheets
will be coming home on Wednesday and journal pages are coming home today.
Students need to be able to count from 1-100, fill in the missing shape in a
pattern, count coins/create the same amount using fewer coins, and fill in
the missing numbers on Frames and Arrows. Part B will cover time to the
quarter hour and measurement.

~Reading: In reading this week, we’re working on inferencing. This is when
a reader predicts what will happen based on the facts from the story. For
example, if a story is talking about the leaves changing and children are
getting out their sweaters, then you may inference that this most likely
takes place in the fall. We will practice making predictions and assumptions
about what will most likely happen based on the given information in a story.
Please try to have your child practice inferencing at home while they’re
doing their nightly reading. We’re also still working on verbs. Students
need to know when to use is and are before a verb and whether to add
–ing, -ed, or –s to a verb in order to have the sentence make sense.

~Junior Great Books: This week is our JGB reading week. The kids will bring
their book home today and Wednesday. Here is the homework schedule:
•	Monday: Read the story “Rumpelstiltskin” to your child and answer
the yes/no questions. Have your child fill in “My Question” to share with
the class.
•	Tuesday: Read “Rumpelstiltskin” and have your child highlight
certain parts that they find interesting, not likable, exciting, or
confusing.   ! ? If able, your child can read the story by themselves
to you.
•	Wednesday I would like you guys to study for the math test so there
won’t be any JGB!

Remember to complete the usual homework as well. Thanks for your help with
this!

In December, 1st grade will be doing their annual IB Fundraiser to help the
Ronald McDonald House. This is a great opportunity for the kid to realize
what it means to give back and help others. We will need parent volunteers
on the days of Dec. 8-10, so please mark your calendars if you think you’ll
be available one of those days. More detailed information will be coming
home about this soon!

Dates
Nov. 18 – Picture Day
Nov. 19 – Math Test
Nov. 19 – Book Fair (9:45-10:15) You’re welcome to meet us in the library
during this time.

Thanks!
Ms. Ferguson
