Hi everyone! I can't believe we are approaching the end of the 1st semester! We are looking forward to the move to the Main Campus. Mr. Usher will be sending home a memo today with some pertinent information about the move. Please be sure to look for it. Here is a look ahead at next week... Phonics/Language Arts: Next week we will continue our journey through Vowel Valley. I will introduce the /e/ sound to the students. The /e/ sound is often confused with the /i/ sound, especially in their writing. Since we just introduced the /i/ sound this week, I am anticipating that many students may struggle differentiating between the /i/ and /e/ sounds next week as we do our fluency drills and take the spelling "test" on Friday. Please take some time next week to not only work on the phonetic /e/ words, but also in reviewing the phonetic /i/ words from this week. The red words for next week will be "of" and "was". Social Studies/Science: We will be wrapping up our "American Symbols" unit next week through the symbols presentations that your child has been working on at home. Please begin sending those projects in with your child next week. We will begin sharing them on Tuesday. Math: Next week in Math we will find the sum of two (and three) dice rolls, explore properties of various shapes and examine whether their orientation impacts what we call them, work on simple subtraction problems and math facts, as well as number writing numbers greater than 20. Writing: In Writer's Workshop we will begin persuasive writing. I will be using "The Pigeon Wants A Puppy", by Mo Willems as an introduction to this genre of writing. The students will be encouraged to think of something they would like to persuade someone to do and then provide 2 reasons in their writing that would persuade the reader to grant their wish (i.e. "I think we should have recess all day because children get exercise at recess, and exercise is good for your body. Also, if we had recess all day the school would be quiet and Ms. Bobbie could get a lot of work done!") Blog: I will be posting a new blog sometime over the weekend. One of our friends, Ash Midkiff, will be moving to Dubai over the holiday break, so the blog page will be titled "The One Thing I Will Miss About Ash Is...". Please take some time between this weekend and the 18th to visit this page with your child and allow them to post a response. I am sure it will be very special for Ash and his family. Internet Access: I will not have internet access at school the 16th-18th of this month. The technology department is coming to disconnect the computers on the 16th in preparation for the move to the Main Campus. If you need to reach me on those days you will need to send a note in with your child or call the office. You may also try my cell phone: 404-723-5308. That's all for now! Have a fantastic weekend! -Kenny
