1st grade Nouvelles

From Cameroun, we traveled to Switzerland, where the snow-covered mountains
have been great for skiing. The students have been studying warm clothing
and cold weather; shapes and time with cuckoo clocks; rooms of the “chalet”;
numbers 40-100 and counting by tens. We will soon say “Au revoir” to our
hostess, Sophie la vache (cow) and keep on moving to our next French-speaking
place.

la fête des rois — le 6 janvier

On this day, the family shares a flat round cake called a galette.
A feve, or favor, is hidden inside. Whoever eats the slice with the feve
shall be crowned king or queen for the day and have good luck for the year.

la couronne — crown / la bonne chance — good luck
la reine — queen / le roi — king

A “grand merci” goes out to the galette volunteers, they were delicious and
the kids had beaucoup de fun!

New vocabulary and/or activities are below, please practice
them with your child. Thank you for your support.

in which French is either the official language, or one of the official
languages. This number is second only to English, which is spoken officially
in 45 countries. French and English are the only languages spoken as a native
language on 5 continents and the only languages taught in every country in
the world.
•128 million Francophones: speak French (as a native or adopted language)
fluently and use it on a regular basis.

•72 million "partiel" Francophones: live in a francophone country but do not
speak French regularly, due to limited knowledge.

•100-110 million students of all ages: do not live in a francophone country,
but have learned/are learning French in order to communicate with
Francophones.
