The Sarah Smith Education Foundation is a vital part of what makes our
school great! SSEF funds have a direct impact on my classroom and my
students. Please take a look at the many great things SSEF affords my
classroom, and other 2nd Grade classes:
Smart Phonics: A phonetic approach to teaching reading.
SSEF provides training for each homeroom teacher for two-weeks. Funds also
provide consumables and activities for each individual student.
Junior Great Books:
A reading program aimed at improving reading comprehension and critical
thinking skills. Funds pay for teacher training and consumable books for each
child.
Mountain Language
A classroom program for reinforcing grammar and
English language skills. Funds this year will provide kits for new
classrooms.
Everyday Math
A research-based program proven to build students' mathematical knowledge
from the basics to higher-order thinking and critical problem solving.
Adopted by APS, SSEF funds pay for supplemental materials.
High Touch-High Tech
Local scientists set up and oversee ‘in house’ field trips. Hands on
experiments are conducted in classrooms, which correlate directly with
Science Curriculum.
Field trips: 2 per grade
Science Lab
Uses hands-on activities and lab experiments to help each SRS student
discover the joy of science, critical thinking and scientific methodology.
The curriculum is driven by Georgia Performance Standards and the IB Inquiry-
based Units.
First in Math
An online game, organized by skill sets, which is designed to strengthen math
skills. Aligns with national math standards. SSEF funds will pay for an
online subscription for every student above kindergarten.
STAR Assessment Program
A fast and reliable computer-based method for assessing and tracking student
progress in reading. Reading levels can be used to provide individualized
instruction.
International Baccalaureate
SRS was first awarded IB status in 2005. The IB program encourages students
to be active learners, well-rounded individuals, and engaged world citizens.
This program impacts the whole curriculum at SRS, teaching each student
essential skills for learning and becoming a productive global citizen. SSEF
funds pay for inquiry materials for each grade, and for required development
and training of teachers.
World Traveler Program
A new school-wide program supporting the updated Georgia curriculum and the
IB philosophy. Each spring, with passports in hand, the entire school will
travel to an exciting international destination. Students will learn about
the culture, history, art, architecture, and music of the region. This
program will replace the Time Travelers Program. Funds for 09/10 will cover a
final year of Time Travelers for 5th grade and the startup costs for World
Travelers Program.
Teacher Enrichment
The SSEF offers continuing educational opportunities to the SRS faculty. SSEF
funds are available for all teachers to attend staff seminars, staff
retreats, and local staff development opportunities. Teachers may also apply
for up to $500 through the Teacher Initiative Program.
