SSEF
The Sarah Smith Education Foundation is a vital part of what makes our school great! I have donated to SSEF as they definitely have a direct impact on my classroom and my students. Please take a look at the many great things SSEF has been a part of and help build upon such a great tradition!
Junior Great Books
A reading program aimed at improving reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. Funds pay for teacher training and consumable books for each child. This program will be expanded to all grades in 09/10. Grades : K-5
Mountain Language Adopted in 07/08, this is a classroom program for reinforcing grammar and English language skills. Funds this year will provide kits for new classrooms. Grades: All French Workbooks
Reinforces written expression and coordinates with the French curriculum. Funds pay for consumable French workbooks containing theme based supplemental material. Grades : 2-5
Everyday Math A research-based program proven to build students' mathematical knowledge from the basics to higher-order thinking and critical problem solving. Adopted by APS, SSEF funds pay for supplemental materials. Grades: All High Touch-High Tech
Local scientists set up and oversee ‘in house’ field trips. Hands on experiments are conducted in classrooms, which correlate directly with Science Curriculum. Grades : K-5, 2 trips/gradeScience Lab
Uses hands-on activities and lab experiments to help each SRS student discover the joy of science, critical thinking and scientific methodology. The curriculum is driven by Georgia Performance Standards and the IB Inquiry-based Units.
Grades: 1-5 First in Math
An online game, organized by skill sets, which is designed to strengthen math skills. Aligns with national math standards. SSEF funds will pay for an online subscription for every student above kindergarten. Grades: 1-5 STAR Assessment Program
A fast and reliable computer-based method for assessing and tracking student progress in reading. Reading levels can be used to provide individualized instruction. Grades: 1-5 International Baccalaureate
SRS was first awarded IB status in 2005. The IB program encourages students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals, and engaged world citizens. This program impacts the whole curriculum at SRS, teaching each student essential skills for learning and becoming a productive global citizen. SSEF funds pay for inquiry materials for each grade, and for required development and training of teachers. Grades: All
Future Problem Solvers
An international program, annually involving over 250,000 students around the world, which is focused on the development of creative thinking skills to design and promote positive futures for the society in which they live. Grades: 3-5 Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program which challenges students to apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to the local, state, and World level competitions. Grades: 3-5 National Geographic Bee
The National Geographic Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Students practice geography for four months to prepare for the school bee in January. The winner of the school bee competes for a place on the State team and then the National finals in D.C. Grades: 4-5World Traveler Program
A new school-wide program supporting the updated Georgia curriculum and the IB philosophy. Each spring, with passports in hand, the entire school will travel to an exciting international destination. Students will learn about the culture, history, art, architecture, and music of the region. This program will replace the Time Travelers Program. Funds for 09/10 will cover a final year of Time Travelers for 5th grade and the startup costs for World Travelers Program. Teacher Enrichment The SSEF offers continuing educational opportunities to the SRS faculty. SSEF funds are available for all teachers to attend staff seminars, staff retreats, and local staff development opportunities. Teachers may also apply for up to $500 through the Teacher Initiative Program. Grades: All ***SAVE THE DATE! Supernova 2010 - A Benefit for the Stars of Sarah Smith Elementary will be held Friday, February 19th at the Mason Murer Art Gallery. You won't want to miss this stellar evening. Look for more information later in the fall. I had a great time last year and am looking forward to a great night again this year!
