Announcements!

~I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving with your families!

~We will be completing our Weather unit and will take an assessment on
Friday. I will be reviewing all week with the students to ensure success of
all objectives covered. We will also be working on the content during small
groups this week.

~I am very excited about the two upcoming events to help raise money for our
local Ronald McDonald House! Thank you to all that are able to volunteer for
our Candy Cane Gram Sale and the Holiday Craft Festival. We are in need of
one more volunteer after school on Dec. 10 from 3-4:15. Please let Mrs.
Martin know if you can fill the spot. I will be sending home a hard copy of
the info that I sent you through email about these events on Monday.

~We are also asking if everyone could donate four boxes of candy canes to
help with the candy cane gram sale. If you are able, please send them in by
Dec. 4th. Thanks so much!

~Each year, our class participates in a Holiday Book Exchange. Each child
purchases a new book ($5 limit)to give to another classmate. Girls buy for
girls and boys buy for another boy in the class. Please wrap the book and
place a label on it indicating who it is from. Please do not fill in the 'To'
portion. We will play a game similar to Musical Chairs, only with the books.
When the music stops, each child will receive a new book from someone in the
class! If your child is unable to participate, please let me know before Dec.
15, when the books are due.

~We will be covering a lot of info over the next three weeks of school. The
activities stated above are part of our IB unit, "Helping Others" which we
will begin this week. This unit is all about how we can do our part to help
our local community and why it is important to help those in need.

~We will also be reviewing the /ie/ sound as in 'pie' this week in
phonics. Spelling words will be sent home on Monday. Please be sure that your
child is reading the fluency passage for homework on Tuesday. The more they
recognize all the words, the more fluency increases as well as recognition of
sight words.

~Almost all the students are on our AR chart in class! They have to take
tests on the computer and earn at least 2 points to be placed on the chart.
Way to go guys! Keep reading!

~We have been working on main idea and details in our reading passages! This
is a concept that can be very hard for first graders. It would be great if
you could continue to ask your child questions about what they have read and
ask them about the details within the chapters or stories they are reading.

~We are also continuing to write sentences on topic with details. They
students did a great job adding adjectives to their writing passages. We are
also correcting our sentences and using the correct verbage in them. Please
continue to monitor their writing at home.

~We have two new star students! Congratulations to Ella Jones and Christopher
Lee! Thanks for being such great friends to all! Don't forget to bring pics
to school this week.

~Students, answer the following question for three table points! Be sure to
whisper the answer in my ear in the morning!

What are the proper nouns in the sentence below?

Dr. Baker is so sad that Alabama beat Auburn!
