Hi my name is Afiya Hughes. My family and I are originally from Los
Angeles, California, but we have been residents of Georgia for the past
three years. I like Atlanta a lot, however, as the saying goes, "there's no
place like home." The sunny beaches of California and its great weather are
simply second to none!!
I joined the Sarah Smith family in February of 2008 and hope that this, my
first full year, will be as great and rewarding as my first few months. I
received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Black Studies and Philosophy from the
University of California, Santa Barbara in 1998 and my Master of Arts degree
in 2007 in Education: Special Education from the University of Phoenix.
I love to sing, read, visit museums and travel. Although I have travelled
extensively within the US my international travel is less impressive; I've
only seen parts of the Caribbean.
I am wonderfully married and have one daughter who is an athlete and a
senior in high school. We have one pet, a family Chihuahua named Tommy whom
we always dress in funny clothes and wigs.
It is my keen desire that every child learns to effectively communicate
through the appropriate use of both written and spoken language
conventions. I further realize that every child will have a greater chance
at success, regardless of limitations, once he or she becomes capable of
independent, critical thought processes. I believe that once children see
knowledge as a means for gaining independence, wealth, security, and self-
awareness, the desire to learn will become so over-whelming no obstacle will
have a chance.
