St. Thomas More Art Classes

Students in K-5th grades visit the art room once in the sixth day rotation. They experience an hour of projects designed to teach thinking, feeling and creativity while introducing new mediums and continued practice with familiar ones. Students gather inspiration through art history, aesthetics, observations into other cultures and even a little art critique! Seasonal activities are included, along with units integrated into other disciplines.

Middle School students attend art classes on a quarterly basis once a week for 2 periods. Choices this year include: Architecture, "Viva Picasso", The Art of Gardening, Asian Art, Altered Books, Folk Art, Quilts and Songs (a study of the music and quilts of Gee's Bend), Ceramics, Virtual Art Museum (includes a study of Icons), and the Spring Musical (set and costumes). New this year is a Thursday "Art Lovers" class that meets all 4 quarters and delves into a variety of projects and mediums. These classes are meant to make art relevant, meaningful and memorable.

Lessons provide a specific learning goal that coincides with National, State and Archdiocesan Standards for the Arts. Projects encourage the students to explore, make choices, experiment, problem sove and see new possibilities in each opportunity presented. STM recognizes that art comes naturally at a very young age and our intent is to nurture and develop these visually-creative tendencies. "We are a community, in partnership with families and our parish, where each person is valued and respected" (part of our mission statement). The arts have grown because of this parnership and we are grateful for the support (and our new projector!)

Ever wish you were a "fly on the wall" of the art room? Look through the photos pages of this website to see what we are working on! Of course you are always welcome to stop by in person.
