Introduction
Cemeteries provide a treasure trove of interesting information about the past and present of a community: their religious attitudes, their medical histories, the wars and catastrophes that affected them, and their ethnic origins. We are lucky enough to live within walking distance of a cemetery that has been in use since 1826, Decatur Cemetery.
We will visit the cemetery and tour it. We will also return on our own to collect information and take pictures of specific graves. We will use that information to start building an Access database of information about Decatur Cemetery and produce a PowerPoint presentation about our findings.
Before we go to the cemetery, will discuss what we can learn from cemeteries and investigate a little about the history of Decatur and some of the famous people buried in Decatur Cemetery.
