Grade 3 Curriculum

Dear Parents,

Your third grader has an exciting year ahead.  We’ve learned about getting along with each other, and practiced our social skills. Now we are going to learn to be Peace Makers, how to manage homework time, reduce stress, and make healthy choices.

The third grade Life Skills curriculum uses pieces from several resources; The Peace Scholars Curriculum, Stress Management and Me, a teacher-designed study skills unit, Creative Conflict Solving for Kids, and Be Cool.  There will be stories and activities that are designed to teach children how to be Peace Makers in their families and in their friendships.  We will also begin Study Skills work to help children manage homework.  The Stress Management and Me helps children learn about the brain and how bodies react under stressful situations.  In other words, we’ll be trying to figure out when the stomach has “butterflies” because of stress, and when our stomach is upset because we are sick. The Be Cool videos provide strategies for handling teasing and bullies.  The curriculum also includes body safety, stranger danger, and drug prevention work.  We’ll continue to work on the ‘Rules for Fighting Fair’ we started way back in Kindergarten.  Hopefully, we’ve learned to attack problems, not people.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Fleming
