Grade 5 Curriculum
Dear Parents,
Fifth Grade is finally here! I know your home will be busy with all the activity that happens in grade 5 (read hormones). It is such and exciting time in your child’s life. We will begin the year with a study skills unit designed to help your student manage time and plan a personal study schedule. Don't be surprised if lots of clock-watching activity is going on in your home. Your child is beginning to figure out just where all the time is going and how the day is usually spent. From there we will go into a Wellness Unit which includes body safety, drug/tobacco/alcohol prevention, stranger danger, and the importance of good nutrition and exercise for healthy living. I use a series of videos that present a story without an ending. Then the kids have to decide what happens next. These videos always stir up lots of discussion and great questions. Then we’ll get back into the curriculum they’ve been working on since Kindergarten. In grade 5 it is called Begin Creating Peace, Building Community. This really prepares them for Middle School. We’ll talk about things like rumors, and using assertiveness while maintaining dignity and respect for others and yourself. This moves us into a unit on Mediation. The year ends with a unit on careers.
Sincerely, Nancy C. Fleming
