Can I send in a treat for my child's birthday?

Yes!! Bring the cookie cake, cupcakes, or other pre-cut treat into the front
office and a note with your student. We will enjoy these birthday treats
during our snack time. Please do not send in drinks or anything messy.

When can my student bring things in to "share" with the class?

The children can bring in something to share when it is thier week as
our "Weekly Worm." Please do not let your child bring in any toys to share.
Try
to suggest that they bring in something that is related to themselves or our
studies.

May I send an email to change my student's transportation at dismissal?

No, please do not send emails with dismissal changes on them. If your child
forgets the required transportation note, call the front office and speak
with Joyce or Jessica.

Another option is to drop a note off in the office before 2:00. If you choose
this option, the office will notify me of your student's change in dismissal.

Should my student have more homework?

The largest part of your first graders homework is to read for ten minutes
every night and practice math facts (addition and subtraction to 12). To help
them with homework you could make flash cards, guide them to one of the class
learning link pages, or simply quiz them orally in the car on the way to
soccer, etc.

I do not believe in loads of homework for six and seven year olds. Enjoy the
extra time with your child.

How can I tell if a book is on my child's independent reading level?

To pick the perfect book, a student should use the "Just-Right Book Selection
Process." To do this, students choose a book of interest and randomly reads
any page from their book. If there are more than five words that they do not
understand, the book is above thier reading level. As well, students should
choose books that challenge them; if they know every word on the page the
book is probably below thier reading level.

What do the "3, 2, 1" scores with letter number abbreviations mean?

When an assignment comes home with your student and it has a "3, 2, or 1" at
the top, accompanied with letter number abbreviations, this means that the
assignment was assessed based on the Georgia Performance Standards and the
new Cobb County report card format. In general, the 3 means the student has
mastered the standard, the 2 means the student is working towards mastering
the standard, and the 1 means the standard is not yet mastered. To find
specific rubrics concerning what the letter and number abbreviations mean,
visit the Picasso link on Ms. Walker's Worms homepage. When at the PICASSO
home site, find the "Report Cards" link on the left of the page. Click here
to learn more.
