We are using the multi-sensory Wilson Reading System (see "classwork" and "class calendar" for more information)! Each day we briefly review the short vowel sounds using our vowel cards, and review each newly taught concept by drawing it in sand. New concepts are introduced and practiced with finger tapping, visual key words, manipulating sound cards and practice with dictation (encoding). Mastery is assessed before moving to the next step. We will try to cover one to two substeps per week.
- See the "class calendar" tab to the left for the dates we will be covering the concepts in the Wilson Reading Program, and the dates they will be tested on the material (one on one read alouds and dictation)
- See the "classwork" tab to the left for the instructional calendar for the entire Wilson program. There are 12 steps to complete the program.
8th Grade Study Skills:
Individual check-ins will happen every week. Students are REQUIRED to write all classwork and homework in their agenda books every day to communicate assignments with Ms. Dougherty and with parents. Students are responsible for coming to class prepared to work on all late, incomplete or nearing due assignments. If the student is caught up, they must be reading a novel for their language arts class. Group and individual lessons will be taught and modeled periodically on time management, organization, work completion, and test taking strategies. This will depend on the needs of the individual students in the class and what is being seen by teachers and the student as an area of need. Each class, the students will see a spreadsheet of the weekly assignments in each of their classes. It is up to the student to prioritize what assignments to be completed during this time and request help as they need it (self-advocacy!).
