May 9 - Daniel's Story projects are due this Friday. Students have been given
six days of class time (6hrs) to complete this project. They may take the
project home and work on it as well. The students have been given ample time
in class to complete this project.
April 30 - Well, we all made it through our week of testing! We have gone
back to reading Daniel's Story in class. Students will be given time in class
daily to work on the project that goes along with this book. There is not a
due date as of yet as we are not done with the book. If a student chooses not
to do this project it will have a negative effect on their grade.
April 26- As we wind down from our week of CRCT let us look forward to the
remaining weeks of the year. We will continue our reading of Daniel's Story
and begin working on the project that goes along with the books. I will give
students time in class to work on this project - it will be a test grade!!
This is not an optional project. There will also be an opportunity for your
student to do an "extra credit" project that involves oral history. Students
who choose to do this project will be able to replace their lowest test grade
with the grade they receive on the project. I will be sending home
information about the project with interested students on Monday. Parents, I
ask that you sign the form that comes home with your student and allow them
to return it to me. Thank you.
April 12 - Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope everyone had a safe and
restful holiday. We finished up our unit on WWII today with a test. We will
now move on to Modern Georgia and Civil Rights. Also, we will start our
review for the CRCT. We have started a project based on the book Daniel's
Story in class. Students have received a rubric outlining what is expected of
them for this project. We will send time in class completing the project, but
students may want to work on it at home as well. I will provide the paper
that the project will be done on. There is not a due date as of yet - it will
be after I finish reading the book.
March 2- We have had a busy couple of weeks completing our Mock Legislature.
Our class was the Senate while Mr. Yate's class was the House of
Representatives. We passed some laws, killed some laws, and had some laws
vetoed by the Governor (Mr. Yates) We are now winding up our unit on
Government. We will test on Tuesday over Personal Finance,Juvenile Justice,
and Local Government. Student's completed the study guide for this test in
class today. We will move on to World War I next week.
Feb. 3- We will have a test over the Legislative and Executive Branches of
Government this coming Wed. Feb.8th. Students played a Constitutional Power
Grab game in class yesterday and did a fabulous job!!! Ask them how their
Constitution is set up!! Have a great week end.
Feb. 1 - We have started our unit on Government. Hopefully your student will
be paying a bit more attention to the news at home!! We will have a quiz over
the Executive and Legislative branches on Friday. Tomorrow we will be playing
a Constitutional Power Grab game so that the students can begin to understand
the layout of the Constitution.
Jan. 20 - The Storybook project was due on Tuesday. If your student has not
turned on in I have entered a zero in my gradebook. More than likely the
student now has a failing grade in Social Studies- this assignment is a test
grade and is the only test grade in the grade book so far. That being said it
is weighted very heavily.Students can still turn in the project for a late
grade, which is better than a zero. Please encourage your student to complete
this project. We will be testing over the New South period on Tuesday. We
have completed the review sheet in class. Have a good week end.
Jan. 17- Story book projects were due today. Students have been aware of this
project for the past two weeks. I gave them two full class periods to work on
the project at school. I gave them the paper on which they were to do the
project. They had a long three day week end to complete the project, yet a
large number of them did not turn them in. This is a test grade and will be
held to Trickum's late policy. We will test over the New South this Friday.
Students have been given a review sheet.
Jan.13- Hope everyone has a wonderful long week end! Don't forget Picture
Book Projects are due TUESDAY when you get back!! This is a test grade!!
Jan. 9- We will have a quiz this Wednesday over Reconstruction. Students will
be given the information they will be expected to know tomorrow during class.
Also, don't forget the picture book project is due a week from tomorrow -
Tuesday Jan. 17th.
Jan 6- Report cards went home with your student today. Please sign the bottom
of the document and send it back to school with your child on Monday. In
Social Studies today your student was given to art paper to do their picture
book. The project is due Tuesday Jan. 17. We have spent some time in class
working on it and will spend a bit more class time, but students will have to
work on this project at home as well. Along with studying the reconstruction
period of history we will be looking at what the General Assembly is going to
do in the upcoming Legislative session.
Jan. 4- Welcome back! I hope you all had a fabulous break. We have hit the
ground running and are starting off the new year with a project. Students
will be writing a picture book on anything that we have studied so far this
year. The book will be written on a 3rd-5th grade level and will also have
pictures on each page. Your student has been given a rubric that is very
clear on expectations. We work on the project at school, but students will be
expected to work at home as well. Along with our picture book we will be
continuing our study of the Reconstruction period following the Civil War-
HOMEWORK!- if your student did not finish the first two pages of their
picture book done in class today then they need to do them at home tonight.
We spent time in class working on it today. Each page needs to have five
sentences.
Dec. 6- The nexttwo weeks will be a whirlwind of teaching and learning. This
Friday we will have our test over the Antebellum Period and the Civil War.In
class we have been going over the review sheet that I gave to students last
Friday. Next Wednesday, the 14th, we will have our benchmark test which will
be 10% of your students' grade. They will be bringing their AKS folders home
with them to prepare for this test! If you have any questions feel free to
email me!
Nov. 28-Welcome back from break! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
This week we will be discussing the different personalities that helped lead
to the Civil War such as John Brown, Harriett Tubman, Nat Turner and Dred
Scot. We will have a quiz over the Antebellum period on Friday. Our Socical
Studies benchmark will be Wed. Dec. 14th. Students will have a study guide
for that test.
Nov.18- This week we stared our unit on the Antebellum period in history. We
looked at the legal issues leading up to the Civil War such as the Missouri
Compromise, the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas/Nebraska Act. When we
return from our break we will begin looking at the people that shaped this
time period in our history. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break!
Nov.15- We have started our unit on Antebellum period in history. I am
reading a novel,No Man's Land, to the students. There will not be any type of
project with this book. We will not have a quiz or test this week. It is very
important that you study your notes every night. Review the new concepts
being covered in class each day. This will make studying for unit tests much
easier and help your grade to be as high as possible. Remember in 8th grade,
tests cover more information than you are used to, and it will take practice
learning to study for these tests. Practice now- this will prepare you for
9th grade and help you have a good beginning for high school!
Nov.2- We will have a quiz this Friday over the history of the Constitution.
If your student still has not turned in a Kings Mountain project they have
received a ticket to Sat. school this Sat.If they get the project to me
before then they do not have to attend.
Oct.27- We surived the week of ITBS and have moved on to our unit on the
Constitution! Projects were due earlier this week. Students have had plenty
of reminders and help on this project. They have had the opportunity to see
projects from years past and knew up front what was expected of them. I have
several students who have not turned in projects. If I do not receive a
project from them before the next Sat. School they will be expected to attend
and complete the project. Please refer to the syllabus that you signed at the
beginning of the year outlining Trickum's late policy. I sent home the rubric
for this project when we began, which you all signed and were made aware.
This is a major grade for the semester and a late grade is better than a zero.
Oct. 18- We will be finishing up reading Kings Mountain this week. The
journal project will be due MONDAY OCT. 24!! Your student should have been
working on this project already! If they have not been- now's the time!
Oct. 5- We have reached the half way point in the reading of King's Mountain.
It would be a good idea for students to start on their journal projects. If
they type or write up a journal entry per day then the project will not be as
overwhelming when it comes time to complete it. Also, we made flashcards
today in class for students to use as a study guide for the quiz on Friday.
Oct. 4- Thank you all for coming in for Early Release conferences! We will
now get back on tract in Social Studies. Students will be quized over the
French and Indian War as well as the beginning of the Revolutionary War on
Friday. We will work on a study guide tomorrow!County benchmarks will begin
next week. Social Studies will be on Wed. Your student will be bringing home
a folder with AKS questions in them to be used as a study guide. Friday of
next week - the 14th- we will be testing over the Revolutionary War.
Sept. 20 - I have sent home three items to be signed and returned. #1 -

Revolutionary assessment. I will work with the students step by step in this
process. Happy Constitution day tomorrow! We watched a very short video on
the Constitution today in class to celebrate. If your student did not get to
see it we will watch it on Monday. Have a great week end.
Sept. 14 - We had a quiz over the Colonization of Ga. yesterday and will be
having a test over Exploration and Colonization on Friday of this week.
Students have been given the study guide for the test. We will work on the
study guide in class today. I enjoyed meeting those of you who came to
curriculum night last Thursday!

will finish up our unit on Prehistory/Exploration this week. Students will

the test today (Tuesday Aug. 30) so they will have time to study the
material! Have a great break!
Aug.22- We have completed our first unit in Social Studies! We are now moving
