What did we do this week??

Here are some ideas to focus on when asking your child "What did you do at
school this week?"

Week of 11/2/09 - 11/6/09
This week...

*Ms. Marney helped us practice writing our letter of the week "Ii". Can your
child tell you Ms. Marney's letter poems?
*We practiced writing uppercase and lowercase "Ii" on hand writing lines.
*During Animated Literacy we practiced drawing "Ii" pictures, we used letters
to make words, and we used our words to label our pictures. Early finishers
wrote sentences with "i" words on the back of their paper- GREAT WORK!
*We practiced writing our focus words: in, it and is. We also reviewed all
of our words that we have been learning.
*We continued to talk about our good writer rules. Remind your child: A
GOOD WRITER... uses finger spaces between words, listens for letter sounds,
uses an uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence, and uses a sentence
stopper at the end of a sentence.
*We completed a "sentence scramble" for the letter I. We cut apart sentences
and then glued the words back down in order. Then we practiced reading the
tongue twister sentence.
*We created Thanksgiving placemats and talked about the things we are
thankful for.
*We completed a word sort, but this time we sorted by beginning sounds. The
cards were sent home this week. Can you practice sorting beginning sounds at
home?
*We decorated our Native American t-shirts with Native American symbols, just
like the Native Americans used.
*We created Native American children and labeled them with our Native
American names.
*We used unifix cubes to measure the length of different sized feathers.
*We discussed pictures on the penny and nickel. Who is on the penny (Abe
Lincoln)? Tell one fact about him.
*We have been working with the penny and the nickel everyday on our calendar.
Can your child tell you how much a penny is worth? Nickel? How many pennies
do you need to make a fair trade with a nickel? Get ready- we are about to
introduce the dime! Can your child help you count the change in your
pocket/in your wallet/stuck between the couch cushions?

*Dolch words
and a at am as away big by can
come do from for go have here look make
the in into in is it like made I
