Spelling Ideas

The following is a list of spelling activities that students can complete to help them practice their spelling words at home.

§         Write your words in ABC order from a-z and then backwards from z-a.

§         Write each word in pencil, the pen, and then marker.

§         Use alphabet stickers, alphabet stamps or glitter glue to write each word.

§         Make a set of flashcards for studying your words.

§         Write your spelling words on cards (make two sets) and play “Memory Game” with them against a parent or sibling.

§         Write each word 3 times each. Circle the one that is neatest.

§         Cut our letters from headlines or ads in newspapers or magazines. Use the letter to spell your words. Paste the letters on paper.

§         Take a practice test at home given by a parent.  Write any missed words three times each.

§         Make and complete a word search using www.puzzlemaker.com.

§         Which Hand – Write your words twice each.  The first time use your right hand and the second time use your left hand.

§         Write each word in pencil, pen, and then marker.

§         Print each word. Next to it, write the word in cursive. (Not until January)

§         Rainbow write each word. Write them in your favorite color first. Write them again using one color for the vowels, and another color for the consonants. Write the words and cross out all the silent letters.

§         Use each spelling word in a sentence.  Correct spelling and grammar count!

§         Write a story using all your spelling words.  Underline or highlight each spelling word.  Spelling and grammar count!

§         Use a dictionary to write a definition for each word.

§         Use a thesaurus to write a synonym for each word.

§         Pyramid write your words. Example: Cloud

§         Write your words with all the letters scrambled up. Then ask a parent or sibling to unscramble the words. Correct that person’s work.

§         Write your spelling words in secret code.  Use the secret code key below.  Challenge a parent or sibling to use the code to decode each word. Correct their work. Example: glad = 7– 12-1-4

§         Spelling Math ~ Write a list of your words with their mathematical value.  Use the secret code key above to find the value of each spelling word. Circle the highest valued word in read and the lowest valued word in blue. Example: glad = 24 because 7 + 12 + 1 + 4 = 24

§         Write a mnemonic sentence to help you remember each of your spelling words. Each letter of the word should start the word in the sentence.  Example: A mnemonic sentence for the word throw might be Ted has rented one wheelbarrow.

§         Write tongue twisters for each of your words using words that start with the same letter as your word.  Example: the word is said ~ Sam and Sally said “Si” silently as they started speaking in Spanish.
