News Flash for Mrs. Boone’s 5th Grade Class: May 7th, 2009
Important Information
Parents, I know that the end of the year is a crazy time, and that sometimes we are asked to give in
too many different areas (time and treasure). Please help us make sure that these are 2 ½ great
weeks for our kids! Please look at the opportunities to help below, and determine how you are best
able to help the kids.
• Field Day: The class had a GREAT time at Field Day! Thank you to everyone who came out to join us!
• Writing Assessment scores are in! The scores are in your child’s Thursday folder. All of their
hard work was quite evident! Great Job!
• Economics Day: The 5th grade will have Economics Day (9-11:15). We will need several volunteers
to run our Ice Cream Parlor on May 19th. We will also need help with setup and take down. Thank
you to Mrs. Sciutti for organizing this event. Please contact her about how you can help!
• Economics Day $: Students will earn $25 per day. Students can earn a bonus $5 per week for any
clean success records. Students will also earn and lose money for various reasons. The goal is to
have enough money to spend at all of the stores.
• Harrison High School RISE student: I would like to present the gift card to Corrie at the
beginning of next week, so please send in any donations $0.50-$1 with your child (preferably that
they have earned themselves). Please send in donations by Monday, May 11th.
• End of the Year Class Party: Our end of the year party will be a pool party on Friday, May 15th
from 4-6:30 at the Todaro’s house. A donation of $3 is being requested to cover the costs of food
provided for all those in attendance.
• Middle School Mania begins: Thursday and Friday students will be participating in MSM. The
contract and schedule will be placed in your child’s binder. This is a great activity for your
child as he/she prepare for Middle School next year!
• Counselor: Students need to send in a self-addressed stamped envelope for a writing project they
are doing with Mrs. Pickles.
• School Store: The School Store will be open every Friday and Monday at 7:15-7:45.

Units of Study
Changes to Units of Study: Students will be coming to the end of all of their units in the next
week. Middle School Mania and the last week of school will be dedicated to previewing 6th grade
material and reteaching 5th grade content, as necessary. We will also be working on the “thinking
skill” of Inductive Reasoning. Inductive Reasoning is something that we have worked on all year,
but just not given that actual vocabulary term to it. You will see students working on various
tasks relating to that thinking skill.
• Math: How do I solve word problems? We will be working on word problems using ALL of the 5th
grade standards. The unit has been extended. The post test is scheduled for Tuesday-Wednesday,
May 12-13th.
• Social Studies: EQ: How did American culture change from the World War II to the Cold War? We
will be studying the 1950s-60s and incorporating the thinking skill of Inductive Reasoning.
• Health: Students will complete their last two lessons with Mrs. Pitts tomorrow and Tuesday on
Safety. The rest of Health will be covered during Middle School Mania
• Reading: EQ: What do good readers do? Good readers apply the UNRAVEL strategy whenever reading
for comprehension. How do I read text that tells a story?
o When Zachary Beaver Came to Town and Brian’s Winter-Students will be working on a finishing their
book review for their culminating activity. The Book Review is due Monday, May 11th. Students
will start a powerpoint on the book next week!
o Nightly Reading: We are working extra hard to reach our individual goal of 83 pages per week to
start improving are class reading total! We would like to get back into 1st place out of all of
the 5th grade classes. READ, READ, READ! Note: The 25 book log should be completed by Monday,
May 11th.
• Writing: EQ: How I properly make responses to my literature?
o Response to Literature lessons will be integrated with our daily reading.
• Grammar: How do I classify parts of a sentence? We have classified our 5 sentences and will
begin reviewing on Friday. Students will take their test over the sentences, subject/verb
agreement, singular/plural, and parts of speech TOMORROW.
• Spelling/Vocabulary: Unit 10 will continue next week. Our test is scheduled for Tuesday, May
12th. Students should study their spelling words nightly.

• May 20th: Yearbook signing
• May 22nd: 5th grade GRADUATION-at 8:15 AM, LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!
