Hi!
I hope all of you had a wonderful Christmas and are enjoying the winter
break! I wanted to go ahead and put a 'bug' in your ears.......Once we get
back to school, we will 'hit the ground running' right where we left off in
all of our subject areas. I know that April seems like a long way off, but
right after we return from our break in April, the CRCT will begin! We have
been working diligently and will continue to do so the rest of the year, but
I am going to be asking some of you to let your children stay after school
with me one day a week (Wednesday or Thursday) to have extra time to prepare
for the CRCT. I have looked at CRCT scores from the 2008-09 school year and
the math and language arts scores from our quarterly post tests from the 1st
and 2nd quarters of this year to determine which of our 'kids' need an extra
boost in preparing for the CRCT in April. If your child falls in this
catagory, I will be contacting you the week we return in January and our
after school prep time will begin the following week. We will determine what
day of the week we will meet when I find out which day works best for the
majority of those who will be attending. Any of my 'kids' are welcome to
join me, but I would highly recommend that those I contact make it a priority
to have their child attend. Please tell your children 'hi' for me! I'll see
them all bright and early Tuesday, January 5th, 2010! (Wow....2010!)

Dear Parents of Fourth and Fifth Grade Students,
As a part of this year’s music curriculum, your child will be learning to
play the recorder. Due to health reasons, it is recommended that each child
provide their own recorder to use on music days. However, if your child does
not have a recorder, one can be provided to use during class. Learning to
play the recorder will reinforce music reading skills, and give your child a
head start towards determining their interest in middle school band or
orchestra.
The recorder is a plastic or wooden instrument about 12 inches long.
Recorders are available at most music stores, (e.g., Ponier Music, Ken
Stanton, etc.). I do recommend that you buy a recorder from a music
store. The recorders that you buy in music stores are generally of better
quality than you would buy in a department store. Please do not buy a
recorder from The Dollar Tree. Those recorders are not meant to be musical
instruments, rather they are meant to be a toy. Recorders are not available
for purchase at school.
When purchasing a recorder, make sure of the following:
Recorder Type
A. Soprano recorder pitched in “C”
B. Baroque fingering
C. Can be in 1, 2, or 3 pieces. (Parts are not as easily lost with a
one piece recorder)
Approximate cost of a recorder depends on the type of recorder that you buy.
I checked the prices at Ken Stanton Music last night. An Angel Recorder is
$3.50. A Yamaha Recorder is $7.99 (The Yamaha Recorders come in different
colors). They do have a wooden recorder available, but it is not needed for
our purposes and plus wooden recorders are much more expensive.
If your child already has a recorder, it will not be necessary to purchase
one. We will begin using the recorder in music classes on Tuesday, January
5th. Please have your child bring his/her recorder to school on the
scheduled day their homeroom has music.
We will be using the recorders in every class from January 5th until the end
of the year; therefore, learning to play the recorder will be a major part of
your child’s grade in music class.
Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please email me
at Larry.Drawdy@cobbk12.org. I will return your email as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Larry Drawdy
Music Specialist

We are excited to provide additional time for math enrichment for our
students. We are reorganizing our schedule to include an additional 45 minute

need additional support as well as provide extension activities for those
students who are proficient but are ready to engage in activities that
stretch the learning. Please see our attached schedule for details.
Our particular class schedule will basically stay the same, except for some
changes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
