Sieracki Sentinel- April 29th, 2012 PARENT NEWS: Vaughan Elementary Mission Statement Our mission at Vaughan Elementary School is to work as a community to meet the diverse learning needs of students in order to prepare them for success in a global economy. Reminders: ***Items to be signed each evening- agenda and behavior sheet. ***Thursday Folder gets signed every Thursday and returned to school on Friday. *** Please help your child to remember to wear or to bring gym shoes on P.E. days. They need to wear their gym shoes to make sure they are safe while participating in P.E. activities. Thanks for you help! :-) **Reading Logs: ** Minutes: 120 minutes each week. Each child will also be responsible to turn in his or her reading log every Monday morning. The written portion of the reading log is to be completed in pencil by your child. No parent handwriting should be on the log other than a parent signature at the end of the week. The log should be completed neatly and completely by your child. They should be proud of all work that they turn in this school year. Our Schedule: 7:15-7:50: Unpack and begin morning work. 7:50-8:20: Announcements and Daily Math RAP 8:20-9:10: Specials 9:10-10:20: Math Workshop 10:20-10:40: Spelling/Grammar 10:40-11:00: Recess 11:00-11:16: Rap up Spelling/Grammar 11:16-11:46: Lunch 11:46-12:00: Restroom 12:00-1:00: Reading 1:00-1:30: Writer's Workshop 1:30-2:00: Content (Science/Social Studies) 2:00-2:10: Pack-up and dismissal Next week at a glance: Starting this Wednesday we are tweaking our schedule for the next few weeks. We will be studying reading and writing in the morning and math will begin after lunch. Reading:E.Q.: How can making inferences when I read help my comprehension of text? Students will begin novel studies this week. Review/Preview Lessons to begin. Writing:E.Q.:How can I write to persuade? How can I identify character traits? How can I constuct meaningful details in my writing? Begin persuasion letter to Little Bo Peep regarding the guilt or innocence of the Big Bad Wolf. Grammar: E.Q.:How can I identify plural and possessive nouns? How can I construct compound/compound-complex sentences? Students will be building compound/complex sentences from simple sentences. Spelling: Making plurals. When do I change the "y" to "i" before adding "es." Handwriting: Nightly cursive handwriting pages will be sent home. Please encourage your child to slow down, sit with correct posture, and do their best on each sheet. Math:E.Q.: How can I understand long division? Students will begin by finding multiples of ten when dividing. Once the students have an understanding we will move to the algorithm of straight long division that we are all familiar with. Starting on Wednesday we will begin guided math workshop again. Social Studies/Science: E.Q.: How can I identify the diligence and loyalty of Lyndon B. Johnson/Thurgood Marshall? Quiz over Thurgood and Lydnon B. Johnson on Tuesday. Students will begin working on their "game" board which is their culminating project for their famous Americans. Students will need a pack of 100 lined white notecards by Wednesday. Thanks! Science: E.Q.: How can understand how heat works? How can I understand magnetism? Have a great week!
