Reading Strategies

THE READING CUEING SYSTEM

COMPREHENSION COMES FROM:
Meaning (Does it make sense?)
Structure (Does it sound right?)
Visual (Does it look right?)

Self-Monitoring (the reader's ability to check their own reading behaviors)
Self-Correcting (the reader's ability to correct a miscue in their reading)

The Helping Hand:
1. Stop at the unknown word.
2. Think about the story.
3. Check the picture or visualize the story.
4. Re-read the word or sentence.
5. Does it make sense?
6. Substitute a word that makes sense.
