STUDENT SUPPORT TEAM INFORMATION
What is a Student Support Team (SST)?
A Student Support Team allows teachers and other education
professionals to work in a collaborative manner to develop interventions
and strategies that address the individual needs of students who may not be
having success in the school setting.
What is the purpose of SST?
The primary purpose of the SST is to identify problems that the student
may be experiencing in academics and/or behavior and develop strategies to
help make them successful. It provides support for classroom teachers by
enhancing communication between educators and parents as well as assisting
them in planning, implementing, and evaluating interventions for students
who are not functioning satisfactorily in the classroom.
What happens at an SST meeting?
At the first meeting:
1. The teacher will discuss any major concerns. The parent is also
encouraged to participate in this discussion as they are considered a member
of the team. The student's strengths, talents, and weaknesses should also
be noted.
2. The main concerns of the teacher will be defined in measurable and
observable terms.
**If the concerns are behavioral the SST committee may recommend behavioral
screenings be completed by the parents and teacher, with a written report to
follow by the school psychologist. Classroom observation from the counselor
or school psychologist may also be a recommendation to aid in determining
the most appropriate strategies..
**If the concerns are academic the SST committee will attempt to identify
the presence of underlying academic skills and deficits.
3. Observable, measurable, and realistic goals for change should be
set.
4. Using information available the committee will select at least one
intervention to address for each chosen concern. It will be noted who will
be responsible for carrying out this intervention, (i.e. teacher, parent,
etc.).
5. Current vision and hearing information should be present and current
(within the past 9 months). If screenings are not available they will be
requested. If they have failed this will be addressed to the parents.
At the second meeting: (others may be scheduled as needed)
1. Review the results of the strategies implemented.
2. If additional strategies are needed, these should be noted and data
gathered accordingly.
3. Review or request any behavioral or academic screenings.
How long does an SST meeting last?
SST meetings are scheduled for 30 minutes. They may be shorter. If
more time is required another meeting will be scheduled as other meetings
are scheduled throughout the day.
