It is a fact that children do better academically when they feel they
are in a safe and healthy environment. When a child feels empowered it
increases their self-esteem and their ability to feel better about
themselves. As your child's counselor I work diligently at empowering them
through guidance lessons specifically designed to make them feel safe and
secure. One of the ways this is accomplished is by seeing each class every
week. The skills I utilize involves class discussions,
activities related to the topic, videos, pre and post surveys, role-playing,
and other techniques, which empower them.
Some of the topics that are covered are: bullying, stranger
danger, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, good touch/bad touch, problem
solving, communication skills, team work, careers, study skills, critical
thinking, cultural differences, and anger management. Through increasing
their self-esteem they feel more comfortable with the ability to make good
choices.
While I have experience as a therapist, it is not the job of the school
counselor to act as an ongoing therapist to the children, keeping in mind I
have 500 plus kids. I do provide individual sessions on an as needed
basis, with referrals being made by teachers, parents, and the principal or
assistant principal. Students may also request to see me on their own.
I conduct a variety of groups based on the current need of the
students or school. Groups may focus on divorce, conflict resolution, grief
management, ADHD, problem solving, decision making or what ever the problem
may be at that time.
I see parents at their request to discuss their children and other
issues as needed. I appreciate when appointments are made as I am in class
most of the time.
Counseling is a definite passion for me and I promise to do my best to
ensure your child or children are in a safe, healthy, and positive
environment. Thank you for all you do.
