Drug Facts

Drug Facts:

** A drug is any substance other than food, which is taken to change the way
the body or the mind works.

** Drugs can be described by placing them into different groups that often
tell us how these drugs are used.

** Medical Drugs include: allergy medicines, cold/cough medicines, minor
pain medications, antibiotics, and prescription medicines.

** Invisible Drugs include: coffee, beer, wine, and tobacco.

** Illegal Drugs include: marijuana, cocaine, Heroin, Psilocybin, and LSD.

** Drugs affect many parts of your body, including the brain. Once you have
taken a drug, you cannot control its effects. It will continue to work in
your body until the body breaks the drug down and removes it.

What is Alcohol?

** There are two kinds of alcohol. Ethyl alcohol is the kind present in
beer, wine, spirits (hard liquor like rum, whiskey, etc.), and liqueurs.
This alcohol is called beverage alcohol.

** Methyl alcohol is completely different and is found in solvents, paint
removers, antifreeze and other household and industrial products. Methyl
alcohol is a poison and should never be drunk.

** Alcohol comes in various forms: beer, wine, coolers, ciders and distilled
spirits or "hard liquor."

** Many people dont think of alcohol as a drug, but it is.
Beer, hard liquor and wine all contain different amounts or concentrations
of Ethyl alcohol.

** A glass of wine, a bottle of regular beer and a standard shot (1.5
ounces) of hard liquor all have the same amount of alcohol

Alcohol In Your Body - Not a Good Thing

** Alcohol affects a persons judgment and can lead to poor choices.

** When a person drinks, they may say and do things they wouldnt normally
do.

** When someone drinks alcohol, the alcohol goes to every cell in the body.
Alcohol slows down how the brain and body works. Even after drinking only a
small amount of alcohol, people do not control the movement of their body
very well.

** When a person drinks too much, they often wake up feeling very sick.

** People have less control over their feelings when they have been drinking
and they also have less control over how they handle their feelings. For
instance, they may get angry and have trouble controlling their temper.

** Drinking too much can spoil friendships. When someone is drinking, it can
have effects on their family as well. Some families argue more, some
families dont talk about it at all, and some families may keep secrets
about how someones drinking effects them.

** Drinking heavily over a long period of time can lead to serious health
problems.

** It is not safe for pregnant women to drink alcohol. When the mother is
drinking, the baby gets the same amount of alcohol as she does.

Marijuana Facts

** People use in in three forms: marijuana, hashish and hash oil.
Hashish and hash oil are stronger forms of cannabis than marijuana.
There are more than 200 street names for cannabis, including pot, weed,
boom, and herb.

** Cannabis is a moodaltering drug. This means it changes how the brain
works.

** The "high" from cannabis comes from the chemical THC (delta9
tetrahydrocannabinol)

** Regular users of cannabis can become addicted to the drug and may not be
able to stop using on their own.

Some Not so Good Side Effects - Some users get bad effects from using pot.

** Some people suffer from sudden feelings of anxiety, paranoid thoughts or
temporary psychosis. These effects will probably disappear within a few
hours.

** If you are caught with pot, you could be charged with possession of
cannabis and you could go to jail.

** If you decide to quit using pot, you may have some withdrawal symptoms
like sweating, shaking, loss of appetite, upset stomach or trouble sleeping.
