WELCOME BACK TO 2010!
We have gotten off to a busy start in our 3rd 9 weeks. We are beginning our
January Blitz to help prepare for the CRCT in April. Since we are halfway
through first grade, the work will become more challenging and students will
be expected to complete work more independently than in the first semester.
In addition, students will be expected to be more responsible for work and
assignments.
This 9 weeks we will also be starting our study of non-fiction. Studies show
that reading non-fiction books is one of the best ways to increase vocabulary
and comprehension. Students will be learning how to look for and gain
information from non-fiction texts. They will use this information to
complete "thinking maps" to organize their thoughts and then write a
paragraph about their book. The "report" will be due every Friday. Look for
more information to come home on this soon. This study will also afford
students a great opportunity to participate in our school-wide non-fiction
club. Mrs. Moore and I will keep track of the non-fiction books they read.
Please also look at the "Skill's We're Working On" page to see more
specifically what areas we will be focusing on in each subject.
