Dear Parents, Reminders: We are now into our second nine weeks. The work will has begun to get more challenging so please make sure to look over your child's work and send me a note or e-mail if you notice them struggling with anything. Both Ms. Castro and I will be working hard to help those who may not get the concepts we are learning quickly but sometimes we may miss someone. We appreciate you helping us with this. Below are listed some of the concepts we will be learning this next nine weeks. Spelling Test The spelling words come from our Phonics lessons allowing the students to be able to apply the phonics rules to help them. Please make sure your child is practicing their words at home. The bonus word will help students who know how to spell but at times reverse a letter. The total points they can receive is 100 so if a child gets all the words correct and the bonus there are no extra points and no points taken away if he/she miss it. Reading This nine weeks we will continue to work on characters, setting, main idea, problem in a story and the solution. We will be adding how to find the main idea of a story and the supporting details. Please make sure your child is reading everynight. Reading of nonficiton books has proven to be one of the best ways to increase student vocabulary and comprehension. As we progress into the year the students will be doing projects based on nonfiction books of their choosing. I will be encouraging the students to be part of the Britt David Nonficiton Club. Ms. Castro and I will be keeping track of their nonfiction books for them. Language We will be doing more writing this nine weeks. We will continue to make sure we have used capitals, correct punctuation marks and subject-verb agreement. Our focus will be reveiwing nouns and adding verbs and adjectives to our writing. Math Facts To help increase our studentss recall of basic math facts we will have a different math fact test each week. We have finished the 0-9 addition facts and will be reviewing these periodicly. We have started the subtraction facts minus 0 and we will continue until we get to minus 9 facts. Flash cards are an excellent way to prepare for this timed test. Social Studies and Science We alternate our study of Science and Social Studies every 3 weeks. For the second nine weeks in Social Studies we will be discussing and learning about some of America's Hero's : like Harriet Tubman, George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington Carver and Benjamin Franklin. AR Parents please make sure your child brings their AR Book everyday. I do allow them time in class to read this book and to make sure they are logging in correctly they need the correct title of the book. Reading for Millionaire If your child is not a millionaire yet, please keep them reading. It is very important that you log these books as well. Your child should have read and logged at least 150 books by the end of the second nine weeks. Each time your child reads a book they may log it on their reading log. It does not necessarily have to be a different book. For example if they have read the same book 5 times they can log it on their reading log five times. In order to be a millionaire they have to read 250 books so please make sure that you log the books they are reading at home. Homework Homework is given Monday through Thursday. Generally there will be a math sheet and phonics sheet. For both, we will have had done several practice examples so that children should be well prepared to complete their homework assignments. On the nights we have a math or phonics assessment there will be no homework in that subject. Mrs. Houston
