What is 'millionaire?'

Studies have shown that when a child reads a million words on
his/her
independent reading level, that his/her reading level and
vocabulary
increases by one complete grade level. The number of books to
achieve this depends on the reading level. Since easier books
are
shorter with fewer words and more pictures, it takes more books
to read
the approximate million word goal. Upper grade books have more
words and fewer pictures, so it doesn't take as many books. For
second grade, children are required to read 125 books to reach
'Millionaire' status. Students are to record every book they
read, each
time they read it, on the book log provided by the teacher. When
the log
is complete, students may turn it in to receive credit. When it
is
documented that a student has read 125 books, he/she will be
added to
our 'Wall of Frames' outside the cafeteria which highlights our
successful
readers.

When are tests given?

Spelling tests and Reading Comprehension tests are always given
on
Fridays. Phonics and Math tests are given every five lessons, so
the
days the tests will fall on vary. Social Studies and Science
tests occur at the end of each three week unit. Grammar tests
occur whenever we have completed and adequately reviewed the
material to be tested. For all of these, the testing day will
vary. Most
tests are announced by way of each student's assignment book and
are listed
on the web site homework page about a week in advance.
