TIPS FOR PARENTS: - Help set up an organized place and time for homework. - Help your child establish either a consitent schedule for completing homework. - Encourage, motivate, and prompt your child, but do not sit with him/her and do the homework for him/her. The purpose of the homework is for your child to practice and use what he/she has learned. If your child is consistently not able to do the homwork alone, please contact the teacher. - In fifth grade, your child should not be spending more than 50 minutes on homework. If this is not the case, please contact your teacher. - If time is spent wisely, many nights your child may have very little homework. - A child should spend approximately 60 minutes per week reading. Take some time to read to your child or have them read to you. It will be time well spent. Homework is posted on my board and Mrs. Applegate's board each day. It is the responsibility of the student to write it down in his/her planner. Please check your child's planner each night to ensure it is being used. This is the best way to help your child at home. Homework that is given by either teacher, will be considered to be of value. It will be given to reinforce skills taught at school. We will make great effort not to give tests on the same day or give an excessive amount. November 30, 2009 Re: REVISED HOMEWORK POLICY Due to an increase in missing homework, the following new procedures will be in place beginning in December. • A note will be sent home to the parent on the day that the student does not have his/her homework. • The missing work may be turned in the following day with a 10% reduction in the grade. Late work will not be accepted after the next day. The parent note must accompany the assignment. • Students will continue to sign the book for a loss of 2 points in conduct, as this is not complying with the classroom rules. • Not all homework is taken up and graded; sometimes it is gone over orally in class. For those type homework assignments, the student will receive 5 points for proper completion and the total percentage points will be added as a grade at the end of the 9 weeks. If a student is absent, the policy remains that they are allowed 3 days for each day he/she is absent. It is the responsibility of the student to get all missing work in. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding of this necessary revision. Janet Whitley Cindy Applegate
