Here's a look at what your child will be studying this week...

·      READING:  Great readers identify story elements.  We will continue to practice identifying the elements of fictional stories:  characters, setting, problems, and solutions.  Additionally, we will be examining the characteristics of fables, folktales, and tall tales.  We will even get to "dissect" a fable later into the week!

·      SPELLING: Students will be working on Word Sort #13, which focuses on spelling patterns for the final syllable -le sound.  Spelling lists were taped into each child's planner on Monday morning.  Please make sure students are following their nightly spelling homework assignments.

·      WRITING: In writing we're wrapping up our study of response to literature.  We will be using what we learned in reading last week about point of view to write creative "Thanksgiving" stories from the point of view of different Turkey Day characters.  This creative writing activity has been a favorite of former students--we look forward to sharing them with you!

·      GRAMMAR:   Students will continue to review and study VERBS--as they are a tricky part of speech.  We'll be studying the verb tenses and types of verbs all week.  There will be a mini-verb quiz on Thursday of this week!

·      SCIENCE: In science, students will complete their study of light.  We'll be examining concave and convex lenses in class on Monday and Tuesday and discuss reflection, refraction, and absorption.  A light study guide was sent home with students Monday and is due on Thursday.  The class will be assessed over light on Friday.

·      SOCIAL STUDIES: Students finished their study of European exploration last week, so we're moving into early Colonial America.  We will discuss the very earliest colonies of Roanoke (The Lost Colony), Jamestown, and Plymouth.  Students will be quizzed over the accompanying unit vocabulary on Friday, but will be assessed over the specific colonies after the Thanksgiving break.

·      MATH: We’re moving onto a study of geometry this week.  We'll be talking about points, lines, rays, angles, and planes.  We'll specifically study how to classify different angles and how to measure and draw angles using a protractor.  Although we are moving away from computation just a bit--we'll continue to practice multiplication and division, so please practice facts nightly!

·      Additional Class News:

o      Fire Safety Field Trip:  We will be leaving after Specials on Wednesday to go to the Cobb Safety Village.  We'll be working with Cobb Fire Fighters to learn all about Fire Safety and Prevention.  Please remember to wear layered clothing and tennis shoes--we'll be walking a good bit.

o      Scholastic Book Fair:  The Book Fair is finally here!  Students spent time checking it out and creating their own Wish Lists in class Monday morning.  We invite you to come back and purchase books this week.  Family Night is Thursday from 6:30-8:00.

o      Chili's Eat Out Night to Support PE:  This Wednesday night is another Chili's Eat-Out night.  Coupons were sent home in Monday folders.  If you present your coupon to your Chili's server, the East Side PE department will earn 10% of your meal profits!!

  • Jingle Jog Registration:  Please remember to register for the Jingle Jog.  We'd love EVERYONE to support the PE Department so we can earn a 100% registration participation party!!  We would love to see you ALL there jogging together!

  • Our Attitude of Gratitude:  We are so THANKFUL of each and every student and parent in our class this year.  The first half of the year has been full of so many fantastic learning experiences and memories with our class "family".  We hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break. We'll miss you, but look forward to seeing you November 30!
  • Look This Week for that Missing Jacket!  Are the ever changing temperatures keeping your child guessing on what coat to where to school?  The Lost and Found box is over flowing with sweatshirts, sweaters, water bottles and jackets! PLEASE look through the Lost and Found Box and clothes rack to the right of the Media Center.  The clothes left remaining at Thanksgiving break will be donated to a charity at the end of the month.

    Thanks for your support,

     Ms. Agnew and Ms. Mattocks
