Here's a
look at what your child will be studying this week...
§
READING:
We'll be starting narrative book groups this week. Students will be placed in one of four
different reading groups for the rest of this nine weeks. Books we'll be reading include: Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing,
Island of the Blue Dolphins, Skinny Bones, and Frindle. It is extremely important that students
keep up with their reading assignments and homework NIGHTLY. Within book groups, students will work
on specific reading strategies, including cause & effect relationships,
sequencing, self-questioning strategies, making inferences and predictions,
analysis of character traits, and story elements.
§
SPELLING: Students will be working on Word Sort
#14, which focuses on spelling patterns for the -le, -el, -il, and -al words. Spelling lists were taped into each child's planner on
Monday morning. Please make sure
students are following their nightly spelling homework assignments.
§
WRITING: In writing we'll be beginning a study
of writing realistic short stories.
Although short stories may only be 1-2 pages in length, they do include
a clear beginning, middle, and end.
Similar to the realistic fiction we've studied in class, our short
stories will include clear characters, setting, problems, and solutions. We'll work on identifying the traits of
good realistic short stories and then begin to brainstorm ideas for our own
short stories.
§
GRAMMAR: Students will study possessive nouns this week. We'll only be spending a few days on
this skill, but we'll examine the spelling patterns for singular and plural
possessive nouns.
§
SCIENCE: In science, students will finish their
unit on Fire Safety. The field
trip prior to the Thanksgiving Break to the Cobb Fire Safety Village was both
fun and informative. Students will
be reviewing what they learned during this unit with our Fire Fighter on
Wednesday and will then take a summative post-test over the material. This post-test will count as a major
part of this quarter's Health grade, so please help students prepare and study
Monday and Tuesday night.
§
SOCIAL
STUDIES: Students will
continue their study of early colonies this week. We'll spend Monday reviewing what we learned about
Jamestown, Roanoke, and Plymouth before the break. We'll then move into an investigation of how geography and
climate affected the lives of colonists in the New England, Middle, and
Southern colonial regions. We will
then focus on life in the New England colonies.
§
MATH:
We will focus on classifying triangles this week. There are two different ways to sort or
classify triangles 1.) by their sides (equilateral, scalene, isosceles) and 2.)
by their angles (acute, right, and obtuse). Students will be practicing how to sort and classify
triangles all week, but keep practicing those multiplication and division facts
nightly!

there to see all our favorite runners and walkers Saturday morning! J
o Class Pet: Our adorable class pet, Tuck the turtle, is willing to
travel home with his favorite classmates on the weekends, now that the trailer
gets too cold overnight for his comfort.
He is VERY easy to take care of, if you are willing to allow your child
to bring home Tuck for the weekend, please e-mail Ms. Mattocks (Lindsay.Mattocks@cobbk12.org).
