Positive Discipline

I will be implementing the Positive Discipline model. It incorporates much encouragement, self-
thinking, solution brainstorming, and a few tangible reinforcers. We have a lot of discussion about how
to make our classroom a “Community”. This year I will be constantly using the words RESPECT,
RESPONSIBILITY, and RELATIONSHIPS.

Part of the Positive Discipline Model is encouraging students to re-direct their own behavior and learn
how to make good decisions. Our class will utilize a “Wheel of Choice” to help with these decisions. If
your child needs assistance with his/her behavior, he/she will be asked to visit the Wheel of Choice to
help with a behavior change. Some examples of choices are:

Say “I’m Sorry”, Walk Away, Count to 10, Give an I Statement, Write about It, Go to the Peace Table to
talk about it, etc. After the decision has been made, I will have a conversation, privately, with your child
about why he/she thought the visit to the Wheel of Choice was necessary and the choice in which
he/she made to fix the behavior.

We will also be holding daily class meetings to help keep our lines of communication open with each
other. These class meetings will consist of giving compliments to each other, talking about our day, and
discussing any behavior issues or concerns we have with within our class. Class meetings are a
wonderful way to come up with consequences to behaviors, set class goals, and establish respect
amongst each other. They truly help us to become a “family”.
