NEWSFLASH

Week of Nov. 30th
I can send home passwords and usernames for RazKids and First in Math if you need them.
Just shoot me a quick email.  -Mrs. Rudolf
Math- Shapes
We will continue to work on addition & subtraction fact fluency and review place value, 10 more/ten less (ex. ten more than 33 is 44), and graphing for information.  We will have assessments during the next two weeks over these areas.

Reading- Students should be reading each evening.  Ask your child questions about the story (setting, problem, solution, characters, etc.).  Reading comprehension is very important.  We are reading with fluency too!

Sight Words: most, who, now, people, made
Blends: pl, sl, bl, fl

We will have an Author's Tea on Wednesday, Dec. 9th.  Stop by between 8:00- 8:30 to read your child's work and the work of other kids.  Stay for 5 minutes or the entire 30 minutes!  The tea will end promptly at 8:30.  Please email me by next Monday if you will be able to attend.  I need a count for cookies/tea.  Thank you- Mrs. Rudolf

Math BOOM Directions
Materials needed:  craft sticks (as many as you would like), a perm. marker, empty can or cup
How to make the game:  Write addition and subtraction facts (without the answer) on different craft sticks.  Use a perm. marker.  For every 10 fact sticks you have, make a BOOM stick (write BOOM! on a different stick).  I like to have at least 50 sticks in a can at once.  You can mix them up (addition and subtraction) or make an addition game and a subtraction game.
How to Play:  Place all the sticks in a can.  With your family sitting at a table  (with the BOOM can in the middle) take turns pulling one stick out of the can.  You have to say the problem and give the correct answer.  If you are correct, you keep the stick.  If you are wrong, put the stick back in the can and wait for your next turn.  IF you get a BOOM! stick, you have to put ALL of your sticks back in the can.  The player with the most sticks and the end of game (play for as long as you wish) is the winner!
*You can also make Word BOOM!  (same directions but with words)
Let me know if you have any questions!

Class Pictures

Please email Karen Dunbar (Nathan's mom)  any photos you have taken of the class this year by next Wed., 12/2. Those could include working in the centers, birthday parties, the Fall Festival, etc.  We will need 17 fun photos and 3 class photos.

Don’t forget about the sight words!  Check out my new sight words tab!  Your child must be able to read 100 sight words by the end of this quarter.

New Behavior Management System for our class:
We have set up a new behavior management plan with our class! Here's what it will look like:
-Each student will have a pocket with 3 colored cards; red, yellow, and green. Green being a fabulous day! They will also be given a sticker chart to fill for a chance at the treasure chest!
-If a student is asked numerous times to do something or continues with a negative behavior, he or she will be asked to pull a card. At this time, the child must move their card to the next color (yellow).

Students will be given the opportunity to earn back their green card by changing their behavior and making good choices. If a student's card is moved to red, he/she will not have the opportunity to return to green. At the end of the day, students who have not moved their card at all will earn a sticker for their individual sticker chart.
-If your child is on: green=happy face
                              yellow=straight face
red   = note home on behavior sheet
Fun Friday is the motivation for all! As a class we will be brainstorming fun activities for those of us who have a good week.   As first graders, we should be held accountable for our choices.

We expect our students to listen, be responsible, and be respectful to our classmates and our property. Students will EARN these fun activities by showing these behaviors. Please work with us in asking your child what good choices they've made each day! We are looking forward to helping your child become a responsible and productive part of society:)

*Please send in small items (found at home) for our treasure chest.

Raz Kids
Let's get motivated!!!  We now have a star chart in place.  I will receive a weekly email, letting me know who is using Raz Kids at home and how often.  Each week if your child's name is on the list, he/she will receive a star!  After 5 stars, students will receive a special treat!  As of Wednesday, 4 out of 16 students have used Raz Kids in the past 20 days.  Remember, Raz Kids counts as Overnight Express and checks your child's comprehension after he/she has read the book on his/her reading level.  Please use this great tool at home.  We love it!  *I am sending home username/password cards again today.  If you ever need a new card, I will be glad to send it home.  Thank you- Mrs. Rudolf

Addition Game- Shake It Up
Write numbers 0-10 (or higher) on the inside of an empty egg carton.  I would use a permanent marker.  Then place 2 pennies or lima beans, etc...inside the egg carton.  Close it and shake it up!  Next, open the container and look to see where your pennies landed.  For example, if they landed on 8 and 2, then 8+2= 10.  Write the addition sentence to match it.  You can add another penny for adding 3 numbers.  To change it up, make subtraction sentences.  Remember to write the larger number first.  Try it!  Remember- We are working on our addition and subtraction fluency.  This is another easy game to make at home to reinforce math skills.  Have fun!
