Atom Model Project

Create a 3-dimentional model of an atom.

Project Plan due 10/31

Model due 11/7

Essay due 11/9

Project Plan: You will need to plan for the construction of your model.

a) Draw a diagram on paper of your atom including the correct numbers of protons, neutrons, and electrons in each shell/orbital. (25 points)

b) Label all the following: element name, element symbol, atomic number, atomic mass and electron shell diagram on your paper as well.   (25 points)

c) Add a list of materials that you plan on using to create your atom model. (10 points)

d) Please have a parent sign your Project Plan  so they know about the items you need to build your atom. Write "Model Due 11/4" at the bottom of your Project Plan and make a Parent Signature line below it. (10 points)

e) Make sure you Project Plan is correctly headed (Name, Date and Block). Title should be Atom Project Plan.

f) Your Project Plan is due Friday, October 28 or before (70 pts). 10% knocked off each day rough draft is late.

Model – 3 dimensional, small is better (but not microscopic!), *** extra credit  if it moves or rotates on its own, or is a molecule. (100 points total)

a) Nucleus: You will need to have the correct number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus. The protons and neutrons should be the same size but larger than the electrons. The protons and neutrons should be different colors. (25 points)

b) Electrons: The electrons should be a different color than the protons and neutrons and also much smaller in size. The correct number of electrons should be in each energy level. (25 points)

c) Creativity: Your model should be unique, colorful, and attractive. Put the model together with care and quality. Using homemade items or things you find around the home is great. It is the care and attention you put into constructing your model that is important, not the expense of the parts.  I discourage students from using candy or Styrofoam. If you use any type of food to make your model, please make sure that it is nothing that would rot or spoil quickly. FOOD ITEMS CONTAINING PEANUTS ARE NOT ALLOWED. (25 points)

d) Labels: This will attach to your model (25 points)

·        Your name, date, period should be clearly labeled on the model. (5 points)

·        Create a card with the correct element name, symbol, mass and atomic number, and the electron configuration clearly shown on your model. (10 points)

·        Create a key for your model identifying the protons, neutrons and electrons. (10 points)

Essay Section: Write 3 paragraphs about your element. (100 points)

A paragraph is 4 or 5 sentences. Use what you have learned in English classes about writing paragraphs. This should be in your own words. Plagiarism (copy/paste) will earn you a zero. Spelling and grammar are very important. Typed is preferable.

Paragraph 1: The basics: Element information, when it was discovered, by whom, where found etc… (25 points)

Paragraph 2: Write about how your element is used and some interesting facts about it. (25 points)

Paragraph 3: Write about your atom construction experience. Materials used, difficulties, discussions you might have had at home, things you learned in the process, and who helped you. (25 points)

Cover Sheet with graphics that are related to your element. Name, date and period should be on the cover sheet. (25 points)

Essay due Tuesday, November 8th.

If you are not able to get materials, please consult with me privately WELL BEFORE the due date.

Atom Model Project - Last day to turn in is Friday, November 4, 2011. Please plan ahead. Projects will be accepted early. (Projects will have 10 points taken off for each day late.)

***Extra credit will be given to those who create a molecule (like H 2O) or a diatomic molecule (like O2).

***Extra credit for those who create a model that moves.
